I've had the game for a year now, and have played all the way through most of the quests with my first character and am halfway through with another. Yet just this week I have developed the bizarre glitch I described in a previous post - when I snag the sigil stone from the top of an Oblivion Tower, I am no longer transported back to Tamriel.
After the last episode, I returned to the site of the first gate I had entered and found it was indeed shut. But when the gate had shut, instead of bouncing me back to the place where that gate had been, I remained inside the tower, and when I went back to the gate in the planes of Oblivion, I exited to a different point in Tamriel.
I decided to give the gates a break and went and did the quest at Sancre Tor and a few other things, then went to close the gate a Cheydinhall. I managed to keep that idiot Farwil alive to the top of the tower (the lad is brave but such a moron!!!), but when I snagged the Sigil Stone, everything went white for a moment - and I wound up back in the tower again. This is a royal pain as I was heavily encumbered with treasure, and Farwil died as we tried to fight our way back across the Oblivion landscape to the gate to make our escape. I have reloaded the game to the point just before I snag the Sigil Stone several times, with the same result. This could have bad consequences when I try to finish the main quest and shut the Great Gate at Bruma. I have to be able to actually close these gates.
Any ideas?

How to get rid of a glitch? (minor spoiler)
Any doctrine that will not bear investigation is an unworthy tenant of the mind of an honest man.
You can still start a new game and close a gate in that game? Your savegame might have gotten corrupted. If you're a PC user, I would suggest cleaning your savegame by unloading any mods, re-saving, and re-loading your mods back into your savegame.
