Does stun stack?

Post by Tricky »

I'm having a hard time figuring this one out, especially since after D&D 3.5 Keen stopped stacking (annoyingly that's the search result I keep getting on Google). I know it is possible to gain at least two separate 25% chance stun effects on a single lightsaber, resulting in 50%. Moreover, considering that you can wield two lightsabers.. shouldn't that result in a 100% stun chance?

If you wield 2 lightsabers then you will get a 50% chance of stun with each lightsaber, which is not the same as 100% as there is a 50% chance each lightsaber will not stun your opponent so you could get no stun effect if you get the wrong rolls.

So stun won't stack on one single blade, but it will stack on two separate blades?

I don't know if it will stack on one blade, but if you have 2 separate blades then each blade will be treated as a seperate attack, with a seperate roll. Its the equivalent say of two different people attacking you as they are two seperate weapons. They do their own damage and their own damage type so its not the same as having more than one of the same effect on one blade.

Oh.. wel in that case, that's my question since using a Bondar crystal (Stun 25%/6sec/DC10) and one of the fencing emitters (Phobium Alloy Emitter, OH: Stun 25%/3R/DC18, Def: -3) introduces two 25% stun chances on one weapon. Does this add up?

That's sort of what I asked in the first post, but you're telling me you can get 50% on one weapon, 50% on the the other weapon.

*I seem to be forgetting the fact that you have to pass the DC roll too. :P

Edit: I got an answer today.. the larger of two bonuses counts. I kind of should have known that.

So... does that mean in you have a 25% stun, DC 14, 3 rounds and a 50% stun, DC 10, 2 rounds becomes a 50%, DC 14, 3 rounds stun? If not, how is determined which of the two is the 'better' stun?

Or perhaps it is simply treated as two different stuns, so you have a 1/8 chance of the enemy getting stunned twice. (probably to no effect)

I was always under the impression the bonuses were treated differently, seperately, so therefore were not stacked.

However, if you have two lightsabres (both with 25% Stun, we'll assume) then those bonuses do not stack. In fact, if you have 25% Stun on lightsabre A and 25% Stun on lightsabre B then you have the following bonuses,

Lightsabre A strikes first - 25% chance of Stun.
Lightsabre B strikes second - 25% chance of Stun.

(not 50%)

Finally, lightsabre bonuses are worked out, as follows (assuming you have more than one stun bonus on one lightsabre),

(assuming lightsabre A has two bonuses, and lightsabre B has no bonuses)

Lightsabre A strikes first
- Bonus A: 25% chance of Stun
- Bonus B: 25% chance of Stun

Lightsabre B strikes second - no bonus.

So, with Lightsabre A having two attempts to Stun an opponent each with a 25% chance, you end up effectively getting a 43.75% chance of inflicting Stun on an opponent (not 50% as the bonuses do not stack).

Formulae:

25% of 100 = 25 (rem 75)
25% of 75 = 18.75

25 + 18.75 = 43.75

(Note: The bonuses do not stack, nor do you do "highest bonus counts". If you have two Stun bonuses on a lightsabre, they get treated like seperate stun bonuses, with there seperate DC rolls and DC damage).

I suppose Sophia is correct here... though chris might not be in some cases. Take for example a Sith Assassin (or any Scoundrel) with many stuns packed in two weapons: if the stuns have a decent enough DC this means he can keep his opponent stunned almost constantly.

Tough later on in the game, the DC of the standard stun effects gained by upgrades are way too low to compare to your enemies' saves and you'll be better off using stasis field.

Stuns are very important for Assassins because of Sneak Attack... a high level Sith Assassin can get insane sneak attacks when stun upgrades on dual lightsabers.

Of course, if your level is too high the DCs are too low and every enemy will save succesfully, making this totally worthless so you'll have to revert to Insanity again.
