Where is the key in Castle Jhareg

I am currently at chapter 2 and have just entered Castle Jhareg. I have chosen the central path to go down (the correct path it seems) but at the end get to a door to which I do not have the correct key, so cannot go any further into the castle. What have I done wrong? I also can no longer use the left or right path.

There should be a chest somewhere in the room that has the key. I've never gone down the middle before but I know in each of the side routes there is a chest with a key.

If you are at the end bit where there are two doors right at the end that lead to each wing of the castle then you need to talk to the thing in the middle of the room in order to advance.

not sure if this helps, but to any future players with this problem: There is a doorswitch just near the door on the left hand side. pull it, you're in.
