Do optional apparatus work automatically if in your inventory when making potions? Or do you have to select the Retort for example instead of the Pestle and Mortar before adding ingredients?

Dumb question on Alchemy
A note on apparatus...
A proper alchemist will have all four apparati (sp?) in his inventory. If you have 2 of the same type, but one is a higher level than the other (apprentice calcinator and a journeyman calcinator) then the game will automatically select the higher of the two when you whip up a potion/poison. Strive to get Master's level gear for the best potions/poisons.

I also got a question about alchemy.. how exactly do you mix stuff together? Like suppose I want to mix two plants, how do I do this?
