Please advice on leveling

Post by Arnfin »

Hi I am new to Oblivion (and Elder Scrolls) and new to this site.

After reading alot of posts I decided to pick major skills I don't need often, so that I level minor skills up first. Naturally I wanted to maximize my level ups.

I was aiming for 5 in Endurance, Speed, Agilily, but when I leveled up to level 2, I was given choices to gain 5 points in Intelligence, personality and something else, plus a couple of 4's and 3's, in addition to the 5's I earned in my target attributes. Everything but luck (of course) seemed to be a 3 or better.

From reading I'm pretty certain that the attributes that I pass on will not carry forward anything to level three, essentially each level starts all over and you must earn skill ups all over again.

My question is, do you think this will hurt me in the long run if I continue? Would it be better to start again and be more careful with my minor skills, so as not to waste so many attribute points, or is your opinion that it wont matter much in the long run.

Thanks to any responders!

You get a lot of points in a wide variety of attributes when you level. Always!

When you went from level 1 to level 2 you had gained a lot of points in what were then all basic skills. NONE were Major Skills, since you didn't choose your Major Skills until you got the Class Choice option screen just before you entered the sewers to exit. For example, if you didn't pick up a weapon your first fight against those rats will have been hand-to-hand, which will have added points to H/H and thus to your STRENGTH - but you may never have used h/h again. And if you used spells or lockpicking you will have points for Willpower and Intelligence. The same applies to a lot of those first basic skills, so you accumulate a lot of points for stuff you never thought of developing. And you always will.
