HOU final portal malfunction (spoilers)

Well, I'm at the gatehouse, and when I speak the reapers true name he creates a portal to send me back to Toril. But no matter what I try it does not work. I step up to it, open it, and a dialog comes up asking me if I want to step through. When I click "yes" nothing happens. I downloaded the most recent patch=nothing. I went back to a save before I found the knower of names=no luck. Has anybody run into this before?

Nobody else has encountered this problem? Is there no workaround?
