Questions and bug, i think

Post by Nightvol »

Well i have never played Planescape: Torment until two days ago and so far i've been caught up in it, i really enjoy it and i have a few questions and perhaps a bug (i really really hope it's not, 'cause i started to like the game)

So for the bug:
- i'm in the dustmen's tavern, trying to join them and got quest from Emoric dude to talk to Awaiting-Death. I go to him, start talkin and it says the guy is looking into distance, them Morte says he's "gone" or something like that and the conversation is terminated. Now what do i do ? I wanna join them dustmen - i'm into roleplaying and i wanna join this faction. How so i make that guy speak ?

Questions:
1. I wanna ask about dual-classing - i wanna play as a fighter, but i saw that there are quests involved for the mage, can i take one class in mage just for the sake of it, just to start the quests (like dak'kon quest) and then continue with the fighter levels ? Or once i took mage training i have to level up as a mage ?

2. Do i need some of the garbage that i find during the beginning or during the game ? Like the skull, junk, rags, leg bone and the like ? Should i put them in a container or some such for safe-keeping ? Or some of the books ? Diary's and such ?

3. Where i can find some damn brain rats ? I have some rat tails but i don't get the dialog option to sell them to the guy in the vermin control center. And i don't think i saw a rat that i could attack in the Hive yet.

4. Do i ever have enough money to buy some of the more expensive tattoos ? More of them i mean. Should i spend the money early on to get a boost ? Or should i pile them for something really good later on ?

Thanks.

Re

Well, d'oh ! It WAS a bug but i past it by installing the official patch :D Why i didn't do it before starting the game i don't know.

Now, the questions still remain and i would appreciate if someone answer them for me, and i have some new ones :

- How do i get to spend all those proficiency slots i have ? Because it says i have about 5 unused slots, how do i spend them ?

- tried to install the gibbering three mod with stackable items and some such but the game doens't even start. I get that message with "the program has encountered an internal error - send report or don't send report". Anyone knows a way around that ? I'm kinda tired to go to the marketplace every ten minutes - i like to go thug hunting :D

Thanks

You'll have to find someone to train you. Look in Gamebanshee's walkthrough if you want to know where (it's more fun to find out by yourself).
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak

Re

I need some more help, i think my game is bugged like hell: I can't find the 3 thugs that stole the necklace from Porphiron. I looked everywhere in the Southest portion of the Hive, near the Smoldering Corpse Bar and no red andblack thugs, only regular thugs that have nothing to say :( Pls help me

Thanks Vicsun, now can you answer my other questions as well pls ? The ones from the first post too ?

Thanks

You don't dual class like you do in, say, Baldur's Gate. You can switch classes as often as you want to, but you can only use the skills of the class you are (fighter excluded). To make things simpler here's an example: You're a level 5 fighter and you find someone to train you as a mage. You gain three levels while you're a mage (your "fighter" gets no experience while you're a mage), which means that now you can cast some simple spells and fight like a level 5 fighter. If you find someone to train you back into a fighter (so when you gain more experience your fighter levels up and not your mage), you can no longer cast any spells. If you are then trained into a thief and gain a few experience levels, you'd be able to fight like a level 5 fighter in addition to picking locks, stealing, etc. You won't be able to use your spells. If you get trained back into a mage, you'll be able to cast the spells a level 3 mage can, but you will lose your ability to steal, while you'd retain your ability to fight. I hope that made some sense, I'm pretty sure it's also explained in the game pretty well if you pay attention to what different characters tell you.

2. Do i need some of the garbage that i find during the beginning or during the game ? Like the skull, junk, rags, leg bone and the like ? Should i put them in a container or some such for safe-keeping ? Or some of the books ? Diary's and such ?
With a few exceptions you don't need it. Storing it is relatively pointless.

3. Where i can find some damn brain rats ? I have some rat tails but i don't get the dialog option to sell them to the guy in the vermin control center. And i don't think i saw a rat that i could attack in the Hive yet.
What sort of rat tails? The charms that increase your thieving skill aren't want the vermin control guy wants (they're much more expensive anyway). I wouldn't bother killing rats for their tails since they only cost 1gp a piece. You'll get to kill a whole bunch of vermin later on, don't worry.

4. Do i ever have enough money to buy some of the more expensive tattoos ? More of them i mean. Should i spend the money early on to get a boost ? Or should i pile them for something really good later on ?
Yes you'll get enough money for more expensive tattoos. How you spend your hard-earned cash is totally up to you, though tattoos are a relatively good investment.

Haven't tried the mod so I can't help you, sorry. Besides, I'm really horrible at technical questions since they're usually pretty specific and I can't usually give more advice then "patch the game and see if that helps".

Is the walkthrough not specific enough? I don't remember that quest so I can't help you with this either.

Re

Thanks a lot Vicsun, you helped a lot.
The walkthrough was very specific but it turns out that i killed those thugs the first time i entered the area and sold that necklace to a merchant :D Good thing that the merchants always keep what they buy :D I bought it back and finished the quest (i remembered i had a curious neckalce with red an black so i went and found it at the merchant)

I have another question now: i wanna play as a fighter but now that i think, some spells won't do harm, especially some healing spells. So i wanna ask, at what level will i finish the game if i do all the quests i stumble upon and kill everything there is to kill ? No cheating or power gaming and such, just playing through the game because i wanna know if i'll be a good enough fighter for some tough battles later on if i thake 5-6 levels of mage.
Also if i take level 7 and 12 as a fighter and win those proficiency and stats, can i gain those stats at the level 7 and 12 mage then ?
Thanks

Mages don't learn healing spells, i remember only the level2 spell which transfers HP from the NO to his companions. You can increase con in order to increase the NO's regeneration rate or wait until you find a cleric.
You can rest as long as you want, there's no time limit.

Which level you'll have at the end depends on too many things, many quests and areas are optional.
But you'll be strong enough, don't worry.

A fighter level costs 250,000 XP, the first 5 mage levels cost 20,000 and you gain 1 HP at each level up. And if you learn how to be a mage you get the first 3 levels for free. Even 9 mage levels (135,000) won't take away much more than a half fighter level.
You'll have more HP if you add 9 mage levels instead of 0. Just make sure that you take the fighter levels first.
Keep in mind that you have to switch to mage to cast mage spells, and the XP gained while being a mage are added to the mage, not to the fighter class.

You get the specialisation bonusses only for the class which reaches level7 or 12 first, make sure it is the fighter. If you have 18 strength at one of this points you'll gain 5 extra strength raises for free (18/.. are passed and you get straight to 19.)
