ok i am new to this game...obvously, but none the less i have qeustions. What i was wondering is are there actualy "mage" robes or classical mage attire(what you would picture a mage in) and are they good or is the better choice light armour, enchanted......basicly what is the best for mages to wair?
Also as a side note, i was wondering if it is bad for a mage to be carring a claymore, is there better mage weapons, and if there is where can i get such an item.

Only mage attire out of fantasy books that you'll find wll be in mods.
Claymores are perfectly fine weapons. Remember, there are really no classes in the ES series: just classes you define through the skills you raise. So a claymore is just as good as a staff, or a mace, or one-handed sword, or an axe.

To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

When you get to the Arcane University you will be give an enchanted robe. Later on you will be given a somewhat better one. Neither are really any protection. Imo, you are better off with light armour.
Regarding weapons: As you dungeon-crawl you will notice that Mage-type enemies are very fast and use either a staff or a dagger. You don't have to. BUT, daggers are fast. A claymore does more damage per blow, but it is S. L. O. W. You can do as virtually as much damage in the time it takes for one claymore strike, with several fast dagger strikes - and you don't leave yourself wide open to counter attack, either. If you are going to use a staff, you need to have Blunt Weapon skill.
A compromise between claymore and dagger is either long sword/shortsword. The longsword is faster than a claymore; shortsword a bit slower than a dagger. and you can use a shield with one-handed weapons, which adds to your armour class.
If you really want to use a robe, remember you can still use boots, gauntlets, helm and shield, but not body armour.
Oh, for Morrowind, where you could wear a robe over full armour!

Mage Clothing
Besides the two sets of robes you get for promotion in the mages guild you can find enchanted clothing or make your own. Unfortunately you cannot stack clothing in Obiv as you could in Morrowind. So you are probably better off without the robe (it precludes shirts and pants) and go for enchanted pants and an enchanted shirt. There are some enchanted shoes (water walking comes to mind) to be found. The pre-made shirts/pants usually deal with resistance to frost, fire etc or resistance to normal weapons. Best bet is to find some nice clothing (just take what you want from any mage quild wardrobe) and enchant it yourself. The only "hats" would be cowls. Besides tje Mythic Dawn cowls I believe necromancers and maybe conjurers sometimes wear them. There are some enchanted cowls and pants you can purchase at some of the shops in the Market District or in Cheydinhal. Most fortify Personality, Speechcraft, Merchantile, Armorer, Intel or Alchemy but reduce some other skills. There are no gloves that I know of so you either need to use armor or go without. A true mage would probably use bound armor anyway.

Bound armour is rubbish, imo. I have a char with Conjuration skill at 50, just so that I could get a Bound Cuirass spell. By the time I got the spell, my girl had clothing that gave her an armour class of 16 (much better, now); I conjured the cuirass, and her armour class went DOWN! Never used it since.
It's a pity you can't get simple gloves, isn't it? But I suppose you could use Bound Gauntlets to add a bit to armour class.
It's better to enchant your own clothes, imo, rather than buy them ready enchanted.

robe?
1. ready enchanted armour are junk (i think lol) Enchant it yourself...
2. I understand the feeling , you are a mage, but oblivion does not 'like' mages
in the armor question....what I want to say: better wear greaves+curiass then 1 robe. G+C gives you more armor + enchant slot.
If you really want a robe so badly try enchant it with shield. It could be a solution of some kind.
