Ubik plays serious: Why do we post?

No Marine-loving crap
No sp... well, ok, spam as you wish... but answer to this philosophical (and not retorhical) question: Why do we all post here?

It is beyond learning things about the game - we are waaaaaay past this.
It has nothing to do with human communication - in most cases that is. Most of us have social lives and are quite intelligent and interesting (so I can tell reading your postings, most of you are intelligent and interesting people) so we do not actually need that communication.
Or do we?
Is it the sense of community?
Is it the fun of it?
Is it Weasel?

What is it? Gimme some answers here people.

Well I'm not intelligent and interesting - but I just post here because I've got nothing better to do - well okay, I've got plenty to do, I've got a ton of reading to do - could proberly also clean something, hmmm, I could actually write some letters/emails I should have written long time ago - damned I've not got the time to be here - gotta go

Oh wait - this is more fun, yeah that is it - fun

It seems that everyone posts here because they know that everyone one the boards has a common link of being a "role-player" of one form or another. In some places, and with some people for that matter, role playing is seen as evil; it's always nice to have someone to talk to who is interested in the same stuff you are.
I am a big time P&P role-player, and I always resist telling people who aren't into RPGs this because I have been lectured many times on how RPGs encourage violence, and how they are a tool of the devil. Another reaction that I get when I just straight up say I'm a role player: "Oh, so you're into bondage and stuff like that?" People also associate role-playing with sex. Again, it's nice to be able to talk to people who understand where you're coming from and can even sympathize with you and what you're going through.
Not EVERYONE on the boards has a social life. I am one of the people who just doesn't have time to go out and play with people (if I had anyone to play with). I have been an outcast for the majority of my life and I realize this. DO I constantly go to the boards for support? No; there are a few people I can turn to when I need them. Hell, I mean, I only have like 40 or so posts total, and I don't check it everyday unless I'm trying to waste time online.
The main thing that draws us together, I think anyways, is the sense of community...You get a chance to meet people who have similar interests, and there is a possibility that you and another person with click and become friends (regardless of the miles between you, there will always be e-mail).

That was my two cents worth.

Hummmm, don't know about you but most of my regular social contacts have little or no interest in 'computer games' even though almost all of them have carreers in the Information Systems world.

Stimulating social contact aside, this is where I can 'belong' to a community of very intellegent and interesting people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds that share a common interest beyond what I get 'normally'.

There is also a modicum of voyerism (I can lurk in the background watching without being discovered), and anomymity in revealing who I am (none of us really knows if any of us is really telling the truth about ourselves). Although I tend to believe that over time - and a few thousands posts - who we are becomes evident.

I come here to watch (as well as participate when time allows) the banter, discourse, flames, spam and general ribaldry that a forum such as this affords.

Have any of you ever tried explaining to a friend what a P&P role playing game is. Everytime I try, I just get complete blank stares.

One of the reasons why I post is that the board is easily accessible when you are sitting behind your computer. Also a lot of people here share a common sense of humor.

The board also gives you the opportunity to interact with people that you would normally not meet.

I think it's mostely because of the fun. Reading most of the posts makes me laugh. I know I'm talking to people with the same interests and some of them share the same sence of humor. By now I'm actually starting to see everybody posting here as real people.

There is also a sence of community. Some days I actually get the idea that I'm among friends. And as for Weasel? I like him, this place would most certainly not be the same without him.

Believe it or not, Weasel was one of the main reasons I started posting here. Over on the BG2 board, he is patient and helpful with all but the most incredible jerks; over here, still the nicest smart-a$$ I know.

I was attracted to this board by the lush variety of personalities that somehow still had a vast collection of common interests. And by the quick-witted, down and dirty SPAM!

I lurked a while (as, I'm sure, most people do) before I posted my first reply, and I was eager to meet all of you.

I post because I want to belong to a group full of people with qualities I admire. I already had a group of flesh-and-blood friends that fit that description. Imagine my delight in finding another one.

Naw, not Japanese. I just like a lot of Japanese culture -- martial arts, design, philosophy. I'm closer to Weasel and leedog's neck of the woods. Born and raised in the south -- Memphis.
