There's a mod in progress that allows you to wear both armor and capes at the same time (the reason capes were eliminated), but the last I heard there were still unfortunate issues of clipping.

Yes, the clipping was rather bad, I tried that one. There was talk of another one, with much better effects, but unfortunately I haven't seen it uploaded so far.
