Did Oblivion make you buy a new Vid Card?

Post by fullymodo »

Not only did I pay for the game, but I also had to buy a new video card to ogle the shiny graphics. :rolleyes:
I didn't go nuts, and just bought a GeForce 6600 GT.
Anyone go more nuts than me on account of Oblivion?

Already have a 6800GT, but was tempted to get a newer card....

Until I realized I'd have to go over to PCI-E, requiring a new mobo, with which I might as well get a new cpu & memory!
I couldn't justify £500 for a complete upgrade, when my current setup is perfectly adequate ;)
It would also break my upgrade convention of roughly doubling my cpu clock each time I upgrade.
So far it's been :-
66mhz->
120mhz(clocked@133)+voodoo1->
200mhz(clocked@240)+voodoo2->
450mhz+voodoo2->
1.33ghz+Geforce2 GTS->
3ghz+Geforce6800GT.

I currently have a Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 and it's just not good enough. The game jerks and the mouse pointer is really hard to control and stuff skips. I set everything to as low as possible but it didn't really help all that much. I have a really good sys besides that so I'm saving my pennies to get a dynomite new card ASAP.

Nope. I bought my computer over two years ago and it still runs the game like a charm. I guess I was smart about the specs when I assembled it. I figured the triangle counts wouldn't increase much in the coming years, so I got a reasonably advanced GPU and CPU, nothing too special. Textures would be the toughest seller, so I made extra sure I had more than enough RAM on my GPU and system board. Fast RAM too.

The only thing I regret is the sound system that came with the package. Dolby Digital support, but I've never used it since I use a headset. Probably could've saved myself a few bucks there.

Since everyone knows Oblivion is a system taxing game, and that you needed to buy a video card if your sistem was old, I'm closing this thread in behalf of true in-game discussion. Thread closed.
