Problem with guards in general and in the Next of Kin quest

Post by Stilgar »

Hello Gamebanshee, let me first warn you that the next post could contain some spoilers.

I have to admit, im new to Elder Scrolls, i gave Morrowind a shot, but never got further then 1hour into the game (a decission i regret now).
I enjoy Oblivion alot as my shady thief/assassin like character, and it didnt take long before the Dark Brotherhood found me.

I climbed their ranks and i have been send on the "Next of Kin" quest.
Here i have to kill members of the Draconis family.
One of my first targets is Matthias, i pickpocketed his housekey and decided to visit him at night. Now the problem is that i am unable to kill him without a guard being summoned. Even if i sneak past the person patrolling downstairs a guard shows up.

Now was i wondering how to do this quest then? And if it is even possible to kill someone in the city without attracting the guards attention?
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

I had problems with that quest aswell, in not getting bounty.
I got bounty for one of those kills.

But with Matthias I waited til he went to bed, and then I killed him.
But that too got me a bounty, except when I stood as far from him as possible and then killed him with my bow.

Hmmm. I only picked up a bounty for the guard woman in Lleyawin... The one I did last. The other 4 gave me no bounties (I killed them all while they slept -- sneak attacks with Sufferthorn). I reloaded about a dozen times and killed her in a dozen different ways, but always with the bounty. So I just avoided the guards and took care of the bounty with a thieves' guild contact.

That was also the one that gave me a bounty.

Spoiler: I didn't kill all of them in their sleeps.
The Inn owner, you could talk to him and make him attack you.
But, that woman in Lleyawin, I followed her a whole day and night (24 hours), and she never went to sleep. So I had to kill her while she was alone in the Inn and thats where I got the bounty.

How does bounty work?
Noone seen me sneak in a house, noone seen me kill someone and still i get bounty.
Have i been spotted? Or do i always get a bounty when i kill someone?

Not just on this quest, but in general
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

All I did was go up to all the kids, tell them that I killed there mom. Then they attacked me and I just killed them off or the guards came and killed them for me. was pretty easy one I thought, just a lot of traveling. In order for this to work I think you need to kill there mom. Much easyer way then having guards chase you EVERYWHERE!!!

I tried to mail the mods about this quest but looks like the mail was intercepted by their anti-spam software or something... anyway, here's the mail I tried to send:

****** SPOILER WARNING ******
about Next Of Kin -quest:

1. The guy that needs to be nailed in Drunken Dragon Inn can be taken care of by starting a conversation with him and saying 'your mom screamed like...'. Just try it and see what happens. Using block should be enough to get through the next situation. :)

2. Caelia patrols the streets of Leyawiin a lot. Use the direction marker to pin point her location. Make the quest as your active quest if needed. She also sits a few hours in Three Sisters Inn (2nd or 3rd floor) each day in addition sleeping a few hours in barracks. This particular kill left me baffled since

(A) If you attack her, you get a 1000 gold bounty (when the whole reward is 500)
(B) even if you piss her off saying you've come to kill her, she attacks you, you kill her and get the 1000 gold bounty on your head anyway.
(C) You could say her she looks like her mother. She then tells you she'll soon visit her mother. Well.. I waited in Applewatch her visit for 7-10 days and she never came.
(D) I tried Frenzy spell on her too, didn't work (100 for 40 secs). And the last thing I tried
(E) I planted a poisoned apple in her pocket hoping she would eat it but no go. She didn't eat it.

I'm pretty sure there's a clean way to do each kill. There could be bugs of course and I think I'll wait and see what the first patch brings along...

Oh yeah... about that Frenzy spell.. I actually managed to get her killed! Although half of the town ended up dead in the process. Here's what happened: I used Frenzy on some innocent town folk. He then attacked me and guards came rushing to help me. I ran around casting Frenzy on people and eventually retreated into Fighter's Guild. Well.. inside the guild the members started attacking anyone who was attacking me.. and pretty much everyone who entered inside, including the guards. And Caelia! All I had to do was heal up the Fighter's Guild fighters while they were giving a beating to Caelia and the guards.

You could also try to get the guard archers to attack you and then keep Caelia in line of fire. Apply some armor damaging spell on her and down she goes... (maybe).

*phew*

EDIT:
******* SPOILERS ********
3. Oh forgot... I read somewhere that Matthias (the one first on the list) could be killed by planting a poisoned apple in his pockets (he's supposed to munch it later), but I haven't tried this. So there... possibly a clean way to kill him, without the bounty hassle.

4. Heh... just occurred to me.. you could also try to attack Caelia (or anyone), resist arrest, then retreat out of town into an Oblivion Gate and let the Daedra do the work for you. (With you beefing up the Daedra with support spells of course ;) )

5. I wonder if it counts as a murder if you manage to get someone to fall from a very high place, high enough to kill him/her. Also remember absorb/drain/damage Acrobatics spells (if those exist).

i did this quest with 115% chameleon on. I still got done for 1 murder. Unfortunately I have no clue which one, though I certainly didn't start getting guards chasing after me until the very last one (I took my chameleon off in between kills)

I had the same problem. Matthias gave me a bounty of 40, while the guard woman in Leyawiin got me a bounty of 1000 for murder. Looks like there is no way to around it. Maybe this is a bug or something, as I killed Matthias in Umbacano's Cellar(no one was there, and I checked my current bounty before attacking him) and his sister in the middle of the night, while no one was around. Another strange thing bout the second kill was, that until I got her down I had a bounty of zero, but by delivering the final blow it suddenly went to 1000. So it seems that the only way to avoid getting a bounty for those kills could be one-hitting them. But have you ever tried one-hitting anything that wears chain or plate at the higher difficulties? Impossible, even with a decent weapon using sneak attack.
