Where is Pale Pass (possible spoiler)

OK, I've followed the clues I had (the diary) to start the quest. I found the Serpents trail and made it through there.

Now I've exited the door from the trail and get the quest update to follow the trail down into the valley. I've followed that cobblestone trail off to the left of the exit and down into the valley. Two things:

1. On the area map, my cursor has disappeared although the map appears to keep moving.
2. I can't fine the ruins of the pass itself.

Any help on #2 especially and #1 if you know why this might be happening. The icon disappearing hasn't happened before so I'm not sure if I'm going "off map" somehow.

You are in the pass already, you need to follow the road to a ruin. Which is the old fort you need to get into.
