Arcanum: worth buying???

Post by Edwin »

The title says it all.... ;)
Moreover: for all of you that have played the game, i know what it's about, but i have a few questions.....
- replay value??
- i don't know why, but i imagine the game something like Planescape
- are there good fights???
- i've read you cannot control your party members??? if this is true, how does this work???
- Your impressions????

Thanks a lot...

When I get the time I'm going to buy it. I have saw mixed reviews....Ramblins some good points ...some bad. I believe it plays more in a sense like a true RPG should...the path you take is up to you...not just two paths like in BG2.

I just started, but it seems good so far. I imagine there will be a lot of replay value with the different skills available. The manual also says there are specific quests for different genders/races etc. :D
You have limited control over the party members behavior..and no control over how they advance in levels. I'll update more when I get farther into it.

@T: Do you actually have to have party members, or can you solo? Also, is there any NPC interaction?

Aegis, so far you don't have to take the people you meet with you. Also, you can control the npcs to a point but they have their own agenda. They talk to you and offer opinions or advice.

@ Aegis 64 mb ram (i'd recommend more), pentium 300 +, 8Mb video card direct x compatible..it requires Direct X 7 but prefers 8 and a large 1.2 gb free disc space :D These are the absolute min.
So far the interface takes a bit of getting used to, the manual is helpful, but but could use an index  and a quick ref card showing the screen would have been great :)

Aranum is defenetly worth buying
it worked excelent(How do u spell that damm word?) on my 32RAM, you can solo and party members are atomaticly controled. And its not class based, has teknologikal skills like building spider bots and guns, new race like half-oger. Finaly a non-AD&D RPG(not that there whas anything wrong whit those)

I've been playing Arcanum for a couple of weeks now. Pretty cool--definite replay value in that there are so many different skills to develop. Similar feel to BG. NPC's are handled in the same way as Fallout or PS:T. Game is very non-linear, which is a definite plus. Only downside I've encountered is that the game ran slow (and I have an up to date fast system)--runs better in safe mode. I honestly can't see any difference between the safe mode and regular mode, so running it in safe mode has not degraded the game experience at all for me. My main criticism with the game is that I felt there should be more tension between the technologists and magick users--a forced choice between one or the other and more difficulty interacting with the opposing groups. For example, there's a quest in the beginning where a magick user asks you to destroy a machine because it's interfering with his magick, and I was worried about the consequences of taking that quest--but it turned out not to matter too much--I think it should matter a lot. At any rate, the game is worth buying, esp. considering the lack of single player RPG's out there. I'm pretty disappointed to hear of all the problems with bugs in PoR--plus I've also read complaints on their forum that the game is boring. We shall see.
