As far as I know CTDs cannot be prevented at this point in time. I think you get them due to your AMD dual core. I know some people got rid of trouble by disabling Cool 'N' Quiet in BIOS but ....

EDIT: Ok I looked around a bit and well, it could also be the g.card as well. People did a lot of things to tweak performance for both your CPU and card, but I am not sure how that would help with the CTDs.

Some questions -
do you have an HP printer?
can you find the file named mpeg2dmx.ax on your comp?
do you have Star Force? (device manager, click View --->show hidden devices (something like that, it says show hidden), look down the list for a section called "Non Plug n Play devices". Expand that section (click the +). If you see between 1 and 3 devices in there named "Star Force", you do.
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

Ok I understand.
But could someone inform me what CTD is?

ganners update

Error caused by a video device driver

Thank you for sending an error report to Microsoft.

Error report summary

Error type Windows stop error (A message appears on a blue screen with error code information)
Solution available? Yes
What does this error mean? You received this message because a device driver installed on your computer caused the Windows operating system to stop unexpectedly. This type of error is referred to as a "stop error." A stop error requires you to restart your computer.
Cause A video adapter device driver
Computer symptoms A message appears on a blue screen with error code information:

STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
- or -
STOP: 0x100000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M

Action for you to take

We have analyzed your error report and there are two solutions for this problem for you to choose between.
+ Solution 1: Install the most current driver for your video card

* Go to the Microsoft Update website to see if there are any updated drivers for your video card. A driver is software that enables hardware or devices (such as a printer, mouse, or keyboard) to work with your computer. Every device needs a driver in order for it to work. If there are any drivers listed, you should install them.
* If there are no updated drivers at Microsoft Update, and you know the manufacturer of the video card, contact the card manufacturer's product support service for assistance.
* If there are no updated drivers at Microsoft Update, you don't know the name of the manufacturer of the video card, and you need more help diagnosing and resolving this problem, contact your computer manufacturer's product support service.

+ Solution 2: Manually decrease Hardware Acceleration for your video adapter

This procedure prevents the display driver from programming the hardware incorrectly, but you may lose some display functionality and performance. Although you can increase the hardware acceleration settings higher than None to regain functionality and performance, these settings increase the chance that the issue will occur again. For maximum stability, leave hardware acceleration turned off.

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.
2. Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
3. Click the Troubleshoot tab, move the Hardware Acceleration slider to None, and then clear the Enable Write Combining check box.
4. Click OK, and then click OK.
Note: This procedure prevents the display driver from programming the hardware incorrectly, but you may lose some display functionality and performance. Although you can increase the hardware acceleration settings higher than None to regain functionality and performance, these settings increase the chance that the issue will occur again. For maximum stability, leave hardware acceleration off.

Masa - CTD - crash to desktop

Gunner - well I do know that most of the time those are bogus solutions but did you even try? Oh and it does seem to be an NVidia problem ... hmmm ... I'll see what I can find, if anything.

I wasn't refering to your post, but to the Microsoft error report. Those are usually useless.

Oh, I see.

While the solutions look like they are useless (although the reinstall drivers solution should be tried), the "thread stuck in driver" is pretty interesting...

Exact same CTD issue with 8800 GTS

I have the same issue, sometimes I can play for hours, sometimes minutes. A reboot sometimes helps before I play sometimes not. I have the latest drivers for the video card and WinXp updated. My pc is 6 mos old, handbuilt by myself. Intel Core 2 2.13 Ghz, 2gb ram, Nvidia 8800GTS video card, 500 gb sata wd hdd and so on. Not high end but not low end either.

I don't know what to try next. I run the games at recommended settings however Oblivion could not detect the 8800 gts so I chose high, should be able to handle it with this card.

Anyone have thoughts? :( :(
