This quest takes place in Cheydinahl, to the east of the sewers on the mainland.
Just curious, I receive six bottles of turpentine from Rythe at the beginning of this quest. This appears to be the only item that is detrimental to the painted trolls that need to be defeated. I've tried flare and cold spells to no avail. I hack away with my sword and unless it's poisoned with the turpentine there seems to be no effect.
The problem is there are only six bottles of turpentine and at least 7 trolls. I've been unable to kill the seventh to reach the body to get the paint brush to end the quest and get out of the painting.
Any suggestions?

Though may be too late, but I'll just document my experiance in this quest.
I got in the quest at lv2, so it's practically impossible to defeat the trolls with normal melee/magic/archery. The only thing I can rely on are the 6 bottles of turpentine. However, killing troll will need 2 bottles of turpentine at my level. I can only defeat 3 trolls and there are definitely more trolls than that, so I'm screwed (no recent save before I entered the quest).
Being at the thin end of my wit, I start to wander around the area, trying to sneak past the trolls, which is useless. Finally, I found an area, near where I defeated the first troll, and discovered some rocks that allowed me to climb up a series of ridges, where I could get past 2 trolls without getting their attention. The third troll, located at a slope where it could reach me and that's the second troll I'll have to kill. After killing the one, I continued along the ridge untill I finally reached the "blank" part of the painting (seeing the canvas texture), and not far from that location, is the final troll I need to defeat, and the body of the thief is just next to the troll. Killed the troll and get back to the painter using the ridges and the quest is done.
Remeber to use only power strike after you have poisoned your weapon with turpentine, 2 strikes kill one troll.

the games dificulty rises with your level so it should be just as hard doing this at lvl2 as it is 20 (apart from weapons I guess).
anyway, to advance on bluerays tactics if you head behind the guy at the start it is possible to get up on the left hand edge of the map (theres a kind of cool desert looking off the map) and follow it all the way around to the back of the final open area. without using sneak it is possible to do the whole thing meeting only two trolls, i reckon without heavy armour and good sneak you should be able to avoid the first of those two as well though since I am a heavy armour person i cannot confirm.
final piece of advice is always stay on higher ground than the trolls as that seems to majorely limit the amount of damage their insanely annoying kick does hilst maximising your slashing or bashing damage.
