Cataclysm - now I understand...

Post by Damn Snakes! »

I finished the Tomb of Souls and got the Cataclysm spell - well I sold it to Aleister and then purchased about 20 of them - I then went to the Vale of Ruin and then I found out what you all meant by the power of this spell - I thought my character was tough before...

I sure could have used this spell in the fargrove sewers! (haha)

OMG!!! I got the spell for the first time today also. I bought 40 of them  I went to the shadow realm and took out those four nasty hammer-wielding athena's over the chasm in about 10 shots. Unreal. 1.8 mill exp on difficult setting in only 1 minute w/o working up a sweat. I really wish I had gotten the spell b4 facing Gzabhu or whatever his name is. With 10 of those I would have rolled that buzzard.

I'm gonna finish my DL career next week by making a mage/battlemage/enchantress/war witch so I can get 4 learning bonuses for arcane and get arcane skill to 30 plus. Who needs spellfire with this spell?

What's really great about it is the graphics of the spell. Like all the nova spells it truly radiates a feeling of unleashed power. The way it blooms and spreads in sequence, it simply looks awesome.

BTW I paid for them legitly. Not by an exploit.

about the Fiend of Ghazbu (sp?) - I opened his tomb expecting a tough battle (I am playing CE Hatamoto/Battlemage) and he jumped out and I started hacking and he started dying - He got a couple of those 'thumb thingys' at me but they didn't do anything - I just kept hacking and he kept staggering and soon he was dead and I hadn't lost a hit point... so - go after him with steel (I had the Emerald Greatsword and the Kris of darkness) and just hack away and he is TOAST!

I tried Cataclysm on a bunch of bats that were swooping down out of the mountains....

FLASH - BANG - It's raining Bat Wings!

Of course, I re-loaded after that, as it's too expensive to waste on mere bats :(

ok, 2nd time through on the Fiend of Ghazbu and guess what... I start hacking and he starts dying and things are going like the last time then I hear the sound of sword strokes missing.. a couple of clanks and a twang and then the bugger hits me with a wind, and a zap, and a fireball, and something that has me in a corner and BAM my guy dies... got to reload and try that again... maybe my first time through was dumb luck? we will see...

Save for the very last boss he is the toughest boss in the game. He is tougher than Voratus too. It also doesn't help that you're fighting in such a small place because it makes it difficult to avoid spells.

It took me 4 or 5 tries to kill him.

I tried Cataclysm on those 2 pesky wraiths than "cannot be killed" in the shadow ruins area where you have to backflip to get the shadow stone. You know the ones I mean, right? You have to get the stone first and then they are fair game. They died with one casting of my level 18 spell. Ha ha.

As for Ghazbu, I usually kill him by saving so I can reload when I die. Then by nailing him with high level Shards of Stone, which destroys him quickly, or by wearing him down with whirlwinds. I have found that it is difficult to keep the pressure up on him with melee. One or two misses and he goes flame nova and lightning on me and I can't even try to melee him any more. His lightning spell is terrrible.

So Cataclysm works on the Athena Blockers and Athena Bashers in the Shadow Ruins? That's funny, no other magic I had (and I didn't have that one becasue I'm playing version 1.3) did any damage at all on them.... I tried fireball, fire burst, flamethrower, blast nova, fire nova, shooting sparks, ice shards, iceball, ice nova, magic missle, shrieking star, solar rays, lightning, locust swarn, and pain sting.... NADA, ZIP, USELESS.

Ended up having to ping at them with the Necrotic Bow -- took about 6 minutes per guardian -- not bad, but not super fast either.

the athena bashers in the room with the floating platforms and a shadow gate at the bottom are pretty easy if you inch your way towards them very slowly and use a long weapon. you *can* get close enough to them w/o falling down into the shadow gate or having them try to hit you.

Earth and wind-based spells work on all enemies as far as I can tell. Or at least almost all of them. 5 to 10 shards of stone is the best way to kill an athena other than cataclysm. You can off them with whirlwind too. Both of these are great spells for those magic immune and resistant creatures. I agree with Damn Snakes though, you can kill any of the athena types with melee if you have 2 crazy duel weapons or a pro stone heavy weapon. Cataclysm or shards just makes it much easier. I suggest anyone who hasn't tried shards but is considering a rune magic based character to go for it. You'll be surprised by how well it dominates. A rune/celestial character can use shards and lightning and not need any other offensive spells at all.

well, that fiend killed me a couple more times... basically, if I just hacked away he died... if I tried to get cute and throw in some spells, etc, I died... you can't run... his lightening goes through walls... when your back is turned he uses the fire nova... if you block, he summons demons and then smacks your shield down or something hits you from the side... I have killed him 4 times... each time I just stood there toe to toe and hacked and prayed that I wouldn't miss more than once or twice in combination... the 5 times I died all were after I tried to get cute and cast some rune this or arcane that... then as soon as I was back off even a little bit BAM! comes the novas and lightening and god knows what else... (and I HATE dying) - so... hack him up like sausage or else he will fry your a$$...
