Hightower Necklace ?

Could use some help

Guys, I've done this mission everyway possible, but I can't open the strongbox ?
I killed everyone like the walkthrough says; nothing.
I went after dark/ran in when the guard walked away, disarmed the trap; still couldn't lockpick the strongbox.
Tried both method for hours = no luck
I'm sure, one of those ways, that box should open = I'm guessing the stealthy approach
Those are the ways mentioned in the walkthrough.
I'm sitting in my wheelchair, killing myself to do this darn mission ... is it neccesary to complete the game
At this point, I'm ready to just quit :-(
Am I missing something ... is there a bug in V 1.1
Does it have to be done exactly one certain/precise way ?

I could go on to the Jain quest ... should I collect my $ & get the Jain quest OR do it stealthy and get the Thieves elec picks + xp + caps
THAT's IF: "someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong" ?

The darn box will not open; no matter what I do ... I even set off the trap; just to make sure thst was working

I'm really lost here ... any adivce would be greatly appreciated

Figured it out this morning; by accident.
I tried to steal(#3), but hit #2 and was misaligned = the chest opened ?
So, after goolgling thru 5-10 walthroughs, I see F1 is a help menu.
I was using my equipment slots to "use" my lockpicks; that didn't work ?

Tough game to play without a manual

Now, I have to figure out how to shoot something in the leg/groin/eye as mentioned in the tips.
Guess another trial and error scenario.

On the last paragraph: when you're in combat, right-click on the weapon icon. You'll see an icon the the right (?) top corner. Now when you shoot at NPCs you'll get a menu where you can pick a body part.
This whole thing is disabled if you've chosen the Fast Shooter perk.
