The CE has new stuff, but are we still interested?
Hey fellow RPG fanatics.
I've been skimming the changes to the excellent walkthroughs on this site, and I'm coming away with the impression that the CE has some real meat to it. Additional quests. Some nifty spells. New NPCs. New doors to open in various dungeons and what not. I'm not going to bother to enumerate all the new or fixed stuff, but want to ask you a straight up question.
If you've previously completed the game, are the additions and fixes enough to make you play all the way through again?
The reason I ask is that I'm kinda torn about it. I've played the game through 1.5 times already, and I'm wondering if I really want to go through the less desirable parts again to get at the new content.
I loved the game - warts and all. The combat system is one of my favorites. The big thing holding me back is that the best stuff is directly related to the main quest. What I mean is that just wandering around won't net you too much more than just random encounters. (If not pursuing the main quest) Unlike Morrowind. In Morrowind, there was lots of non main quest stuff to do. You could wander around for ages and just ignore your destiny to save the world.
So what are your thoughts? Are you going to start the thing over again with the CE to see the new content? (Setting aside the whole debate about this being the way the game should have been in the first place)
Respectfully,
Falloutfan

I've been holding off on playing through again to wait for more patches, but I wanted to play again even without them. The new content in the CE definitely pushed me over the line from "live with v1.4" to "buy the CE". However, I'd caution that DL will NEVER be anywhere close to the expanse and openness of Morrowind.

I have to agree with you. It's a pity really, because DL certainly had tons of potential. I think it could have been a most excellent game had they released it as finished as the CE is now. The CE, from what I've read thus far, seems like what DL should have been from the beginning.
I am going to finish my character (v1.4) and then buy the CE.... I guess you could say I have too much money and not enough sense, but I really enjoy this game! (and it will be worth it if the women in fargrove no longer sound like old men...)
Hopefully the new content will tickle your fancy. What else have you been playing? I've been spending some time with Gothic 2. The control scheme is a little funky, but I'm learning to live with it. Some people have been raving about the Gothic series for a while now, and at first blush it seems like a really solid RPG. I wish I could get my hands on the original, but it's selling for up to $60 USD used. Freaky huh? a computer game that has actually held it's value over the years. That's gotta mean something. (Other than some people having too much time and money on their hands)

Here you go newly released English Gothic for under $15.
You get a DVD, no manual and I guess with shipping your looking at about $20 US.

This info was revealed recently in an interview with a Dev, here.

Trust me, most of the names I have been called you can't translate in any language...they're not even real words as much as a succession of violent images.
I think everyone is waiting for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (the sequal to Morrowind).
It's due out the end of March for the PC and X360.
I already have my pre-order in....
Dungeon Lords will magically disappear from my hard drive the day that Oblivion arrives at my local gaming store. I would have bought the collector's edition by now, but none of my local stores has gotten it in yet. Seems that Dreamcatcher has shot themselves in the foot here, or maybe its just that only a trickle of games are being shipped due to slow production.
I'm sorry if this was posted somewhere earlier, but what exactly is this new content? And why can't we get this CE for free like the patches?
There are new quests (basically one for each city), there are new enemies, there is new equipment, there is a new class, there are lots of new chests (including a level 12 chest), and probably more that I'm forgetting.
You can't get the CE in a patch because, apparently, DreamCatcher is trying to see just how badly they can sabotage a game.

I hear you. I really enjoyed Elder Scrolls I-III. I'm waiting for Oblivion too. My rig is probably up to snuff, so I don't believe I'll have to upgrade. I may try and wait until all of the early buyers purchase the thing and report back.
Software is getting buggier as time goes on. Bethesda, although I have lots of respect for them, has released some very buggy stuff in the past. From what I recall though, Morrowind didn't seem to have as many problems as some of their earlier titles. I hope Oblivion plays well out of the box. I don't mind an occasional patch, but 95% of the experience had better be there.
Although some of the Elder Scrolls titles were quite buggy, their mere scope and depth boggled people's minds. It was enough to make us play despite the many issues. Those were some vast worlds they created, and you could wander the landscape for a very long time just stumbling upon dungeons. Now, it seems, we have sacrificed scope and depth for prettiness. I appreciate great graphics, but please don't short change me on the exploration and depth to give them to me.

When DL issued the v1.4 update I began playing it again. I've already played it 1.5 times and thoroughly enjoyed the game. I will not be buying CE because I've already paid to beta test DL-<sarcasm intended> so I will not pay for the game that should have been released in the first place.
I am waiting for Oblivion. Once that has been released (and I've preordered it) fahget DL!

I would have to disagree. After quite a bit of the start of DLCE it still isn't polished enough:
1. Monster respawning from rooms you just leave.
2. Identify doesn't work right.
3. Repair doesn't work right.
4. Easy mode is still to hard for "EASY". What don't you understand about "Easy"?
5. Character can get stuck with feet off ground in plenty of locations. A guard had my character stuck and I had to wait until she attracted a baddie before the guard would move off out of the way. He got stuck.
6. Still has a totally lame save and restore game procedure--why??
7. The onscreen map is only better then nothing. You can't manipulate or see parts of it so you still end up lost OR you use the walkthrough maps here on GameBanshee.
8. Pause isn't realistic--its actually a built in cheat because it stops action but doesn't stop time. You can be in a difficult battle and use up your spellbooks, pause to inventory or to the save game menu and wait an hour or so and return to find your spells refreshed, save the game, and continue the battle.
Over the years there have been a lot of good RPG's and a lot of good lessons developers can and/or should learn from them--do's and don'ts. For some reason it just doesn't happen. You'd think after over a year and reissuing DL improved in so many ways everything that ticked people off with the first release would be fixed. Part of this blame has got to fall on DreamCatcher. I'm not sure I can trust them to publishing games at all. They seem more interested in pushing product out the door and covering any losses as best they can--which probably means they don't loose but the game buyer does.
What this game needs now is a good Trainer for the 1.5 version so you can repair and identify on the fly!
Excellent critique, Evenstar! I'm even more happy that I passed on DLCE.
On the other hand...I continue to make progress in the game and am enjoying it a lot now that I have come to peace with its short comings. My character continues to advance and I haven't found anything I can't kill on my way to Arindale now.
The spectre on the island in the lake where you obtain authority to pass into Arindale has a problem I believe. I was doing battle defeating it on the second story of the tower and it was near death when it all of a sudden (probably died) passed through the floor and didn't leave any "soul gem". I went down to the bottom floor and there was nothing there either. I suspect that objects pass through these floors and are lost? Anyway, I'm not dwelling on it.
Although I remain somewhat skeptical it starts to look like I might finish the game. BTW, Repair seems to be working now and I have some hope that Identify (as a Skill I will be learning) may start to work.
To each there own but I wasn't suggesting in my previous post that the game not be played--just my conclusions that the Developer and Dream Catcher still don't care much what they turn out.

Evenstar,
Can you expand on identify and repair not working? I just started playing the CE version but I did have the regular version with the 1.4 patch and identify and repair worked. Of course, they did have some limitations. If your chance to repair an item was low than usually you'd only repair a few points. As for the identify, if you failed to ID an item you could not attempt it a second time until some time passed which did annoy me but it seems logical for it to function that way. It would be very useful if one could purchase some scrolls of identification.
