This may be common knowledge for all i know but with my ranger cleric (useing valygars armor) he can hide in shadows, while useing blade barrier , and i assume globe of blades also. So if they dont see invis ya just walk beside em and chop em up , works great for the mindflayer areas.

Bladebarrier does not break invisibility. Works well with Sanctuary. 
The NPC-specific items often have ability score and class/kit requirements to prevent others from wearing them. If you have what it takes, you can equip them.
Thieves Using Any Item still need to qualify for the ability score requirements, I believe.
