HOTU: Valen Shadowbreath - Movement speed

I've taken Valen as my companion in HOTU Ch.2 and noticed something odd. While I'm in the Temple together with the Seer, his movement speed is fine. However, as soon as I step outside and head over to the wizard Gulthry (sp?) to buy something, his movement speed decreases. If I look at his stats, it even says so. There is nothing in Valen's inventory to slow him down and all I did was to give him the following items:

- Belt of Guiding Light ( against Death Magic )
- Ring of Protection +6
- Ring of Resistance +2
- Gargoyle Boots
- Bracers of Armor +6
- Cloak of Fortification +5
- upgraded his Scarab of Protection from +4 to +6

Does anyone know if there are items that slow down someone's movement speed, or what could be causing this? I've looked at every single item's stats, even the armor/weapon he came with, but it doesn't say so anywhere.

EDIT: Forget I said anything. Apparently, he was in Search mode, and that caused the decreased movement speed. Resting did the trick.
