Leveling up in BD

Post by Lokeen »

Greetings Gamers!
I suppose I'm what you may call "the new guy", and I'm actually just new to forums (all together). ANYwho, I was wondering if any of you fine people out there may have some advice on how to level up in Beyond Divinity (specifically speaking in the first Act, because I haven't gotten any farther! :( )?? In Act 1, I've completed all the quests I think I possibly can, killed everything I believe that I possibly could, even EVERYthing on the Act 1 Battlefield (and the first and second dungeons), and I'm STILL only level 9! The deathknight gaurds on the training grounds, I believe, are level 13, and I'm using WAY too much potions, and there are WAY too many of them. HELP! Also, what's the point of the things you can't actually "interact with" in the game (i.e.: mushrooms in the grass, etc.). On top of that, what's up with the "cap" on how many potions you can brew? ALSO, almost everyone I went to to "train me" gives training for level 5 or higher. Why so high? I know I maybe asking alot of questions, but I'm new to this "game series", and looking for a little help. Not asking for spoilers or anything, but I just feel like "the fat kid trying to reach for the cookies at the top of the fridge, but can't reach them". There's alot of things in this game I don't seem to grasp (as in missing SOMETHING) and I don't want this to be one of those games I just "give up" on. I really like this one, but so far, it's not like those games like Final Fantasy, where you can go "out" and get into as many fights as possible to help level up. Anyway, I hope you all had a good turkey day! Any kind of help is greatly appreciated, and if you have any questions on other games (that i have :p ) I'll try my best to help, in return. :) Thanks again!

Ooh, wow, lots of questions there... maybe put them into paragraphs for easier reading? :D ;)
Welcome to GB and forums in general (this was the first forum I joined too).

Okay, let's see...
The patrolling deathknights are supposed to be avoided, like your Deathknight companion advises. Just note the area they are patrolling and slowly follow them ducking into corners and rooms (closing the door behind you) along the way. Then wait for them to turn around and pass you before continuing.
Oh, save a lot during this, just in case.
I did eventually manage to kill them, but it's going to be a while before you can take them on and win relatively easily.
To continue from where you currently are there's a route in the west of the big open training ground, they you have have to look around for a way to access it.

I think the way you increase your skills is governed by level, so you can have Level 4 Crushing weaponry (or similar- I haven't played BD in a while). The trainers each have a level written next to the skill which should show how high they can train you, that's what the 'Level 5' next to the skill means.

I believe there are some bugged skills in the game (though some may have been patched by now). If you do a search of the old threads related to Beyond Divinity, you may find them.

As for the potion cap, that presumably stops you from brewing the most powerful potions with 1 point in the skill. I haven't really tried the Alchemy stuff beyond mixing potions though.

With the interaction of things on the ground, sometimes you can drag something away from it's current location which can occasionly reveal a hidden door, key or similar. I think there's a keystroke which reveals things on the ground which sometimes helps you to discover whether something is hidden like that. A rule of thumb is - if there's a big stack of crates in the middle of nowhere (or similar) then there could well be something hidden underneath.
Not sure about mushrooms themselves though.

Hope all that helps. :p

THANK You! :)

Thanks for the hefty reply, Ravager! :D

Sorry about the "clump-o-questions". Thanks again for the answers. However, here are some concerns that still plague me...

1. The patrolling death knights still see me, before I see them, so either way, I'm still in for the fight.

2. When leveling up, it doesn't make too much sense (to me anyway) to focus on one specific skill level at the beginning of the game. The "selection" is already pretty limited. But as you begin to talk to "trainers" in Act 1, they have like level 5 skills to teach, but I'm still at level 2 or 3 of something else. So I guess what I'm trying to say is "Why do they teach you such a high skill level for skills that you have low things for, especially in skills that you don't even have a level 1 of??"

3. As far as the potion "cap" goes, I was talking about the game limiting the number of potions you can brew of a certain type/size. For instance, I could only brew like 18 small healing potions.

4. Lastly, I was looking through some of the other entries in the forums, and read someone made a potion with mushrooms in the woods with an empty bottle. However, there's still some things that I can "go to" after I click on it, but can't do anything else, besides "throw it" somewhere.

Well that about covers it. I go underway (somewhere in the Atlantic) tomorrow. I should be back somewhere around the 16th of DEC. Well until then Gamers, happy gaming and holidays! :D

Seeing as it is now the 16th.... :p

1. I find using the Minimap helps, if the see the red dot signifying an enemy just retreat. Or you could activate sneak which shows a circle of red light around an approaching enemy. Minimap is probably best though.
Oh, lots of saving and loading too of course.
Once the deathknights are out of your immediate sight, follow them down the corridor they patrol until you reach a sideroom or a point where the corridor splits. Hide in the room or corridor split and watch the minimap to see when the death kinght passes. Once the death has passed going in the opposite direction exit the room and continue exploring.

2. I think it's just to signify their ability rather than be connected to your player. If they have a particular skill in something then they are able to offer better training. Of course, the higher the level of trainging they offer, the more expensive it is.
If I remember correctly, the trainers don't give level 5 in the skill, they give you the ability to go up to level 5 in that skill (you have to put the points in). There are many skills that aren't available straight away for the player which you either have to find skill/spell books or get trained to access. If you found a trainer offering level 10, then you'd be able to increase the points you put in the skill to level 10, but that would be the maximum you could take it until finding more training or equivalent.

3. Hmm, didn't know that. Are you sure you had all the necessary supplies to create the potions? I suppose it's possible that increasing the brew potions skill increases the limit.

4. Don't know that one. I don't really use the alchemy skill all that much. Maybe someone else can help with that one.

Lokeen, per the site owner's forum rules, which you agreed to when you signed up:

So watch the acronyms. I've removed the one you used in your post. Sounds like going over the top? How would you like to get complaints from parents whose 8 year old kid was reading a gaming thread when she came across some stuff we adults use? It's happened.

On question 3: are you sure you haven't run out of a specific alchemy herb you need in your inventory to make that potion?

Woah...

Well Gamers, I'm back!

Thank GOD too! It's good to be back on solid ground! Anyway thanks for the tips guys. In reference to the alchemy thing, as far as I know I have the sufficient number of herbs. Does the type of plant actually matter? I suppose most of this stuff is kind of "find it out on your own" since they don't reference it in any manual (except an stradegy guide).

Anyway, *Fable*, what did I say? If you already deleted the "word", could you tell me what I said wrong?

Well I suppose I'll take another crack at the game with those tips in mind (Thanks guys! :) ) Hope all of you take care!

OHHH by the way... any of you guys still have any advice on leveling up, or is it restricted throughout the game? Just wondering! Thanks again guys/gals! :D

*Lokeen,* since you don't recall what you wrote, I sent you a PM. :)

I agree completely about point two. Most of the early skills are singularly worthless. Although you need to get some levels in them just to survive the dungeon, I suggest trading in gold to get the points back later, and buying better ones.
