hi,
i know this is probably the lamest question ever,
but i haven't been able to figure out how to identify
objects that i pick up? can i do that if i'm a barbarian?
or do i need some special skill for that? i just don't get it.
i'd be greatful for any help.

Generally you would use the Lore skill, but a Barbarian is unlikely to have many points to distribute. To use that skill, you would just open the item description and if succesful the item would be identified.
Your other options are potions of Lore, which increase the skill for 5 seconds or so (I normally pause the game and view item descriptions identifying the items).
Lastly, merchants can identify items, I think it's one of the right-click options on an item while selling/buying. That normally costs 100gp per item and is probably your best bet.
