Do you have Norton Unerase loaded, or a similar program? They can sometimes recover deleted files.

Nope, I haven't got it.
I'm hoping for a free program that can restore deleted files but I really don't know which one.

Did you delete start up sounds that were installed when the OS was installed. If so, you should be able to manually extract them from the .cab files on the windows cd. If they were sounds you downloaded, just go grab them again. I've never used Norton unerase.

It was a collection that I build up during the years, it has survived many new windows, I think my collection ends now... :( I'll never be able to find them again. Better start my new collection now, no sound is rather boring...

The University of North Carolina's ftp site had an amazing sound byte archive. I'll try to find it and post a link.

There is no need to bump an almost 4 year old post like this, least at all with something which looks extreemly similar to an advertisment for the product combined with a few other facts also indicating it being an advertisment, thus being a violation of the forum rules.
