Unfortunate crashing problem

Post by SolidJim »

Okay, for starters I should explain that I have the 2 CD version of the game. I am running it on Windows 98. I expect I did the minimum install (actually I can't remember whether you get a choice, but if so, well, I'm running pretty low on disk space.) The 2 CD version is supposedly already patched to version 1.1, so I didn't bother with that, but I did install the unofficial patch.

Anyway, the problem is that the game keeps crashing horribly. It's fine within the mortuary. But as soon as I got out into the city, it became very unstable. I can play without problems for a few minutes (the amount of time varies quite a lot) but then the game suddenly and abruptly dies. Most of the time it unceremoniously restarts my computer. If not, it just hangs up irreparably, forcing me to hit the reset button myself. (Ctrl-Alt-Del and other such combinations have no effect whatsoever.) On occasion I have been treated to a blue screen of death, but not very often.

My question is, has anybody else experienced or heard of such problems? And, more importantly, do they know how to surpass them? What I have seen so far of the game has been impressive, and I'd love to carry on playing, but I'd prefer to do so without having to save every other second and reboot every five minutes...

To be honest I have to four disc version and have never encountered any such problems.

The only advice I can really give is eliminate one problem at a time. Remove the game from your HD (keep your save games) then re-install. Don't put the unofficial patch and run the game. If the game runs as it should it's the patch- leave it off!

If you are still having problems then it could be the space on your HD- try freeing some up. Also, do you have enough RAM? I mention this as you say your problems start when you leave the Mortuary and it could be the extra rescources needed for the outdoor areas simply aren't being provided by your copmuter. While you're at it, check all system requirements just to be on the safe side.

It's not much I know but I hope it helps.

In case I had you on tenterhooks all this time, I should probably tell you that I've not solved the problem yet. Reinstalling didn't seem to help, but I'm planning on getting a new hard drive soon, so then we'll see if it works any better with more disk space. More, um, virtual memory and stuff. If it still doesn't work I expect you'll hear about it.

Edit: Actually, I'm talking rubbish. I have plenty enough space. I tried doing a full install by copying the contents of the second CD onto my hard drive, but no dice. I've been managing to play it okay, but I've had to restart my computer countless times. Okay, here's a case study. It crashed a lot in Fell's tattoo parlour, but it never crashed at all in the Smouldering Corpse tavern. See, now there are lots more people in the Smouldering Corpse than there are in the tattoo parlour. I wish I knew what was going on here.

Hi SolidJim,

Actually I'm playing with the 4 cd version so I'm don't think I can give any bright ideas. I've read somewhere that the 2 cd version was supposedly already patched (don't know if Platter's unofficial fix mode is compatible with the 2 cd?). If then, maybe your cd has any scratches?
