Game does not Run

Post by Patrick »

I have had BG2 installed since like November. I have Throne of Bhaal installed too. It is heavly Modded. About 10 to 15 mods or so. I do not want to reinstall. I am done with most City quest and about all outland quest and I am about to go to the Docks to sail away. I have ease of use, thus multi strongholds, and I am working that right now.
Here is my problem. I just recently bought a Sony TRV 280 handy cam. It comes with Picture software for editing and USB streeming use. I installed it. During Install it asked me for Windows 98 2nd ed. disc to update files. I did not have since it did not come with my computer, so I chose to skip this. I skipped about 8 times. Ran the test fine. Then tried to run the software on its own and it froze. My internet was then corrupted. It froze too. So uninstalled MSN and the Sony Software. I can go online, but I use a manual connection now. Basicall about a couple of weeks later I tried to Run all my Bioware, Black Isle games and found they do not work. They freeze at the time I press play. Here's what I noticed. I think the movies run on Quick time. They don't play at all right now. After I installed the Sony stuff, my media player both windows and Quick time don't work. Real player does though(?). I am thinking that because the movies don't load maybe the game will not run because of that. I checked the movie files in the BG directory, and Quick time was shaded, like out of service( ). I changed it to real player and it still does not work. It is just a black screen. Curser just blinks then nothing, just black.
My video card could be faulted, also my Direct X by the Sony stuff.
Still working on that. I have some problem reinstalling MSN and updating Quick time? I am stumped here, so I will try again tomorrow. Any advice or knowledge of the Sony stuff(AKA: Garbage) would be great. Thanks sorry so lengthy.
P.S. I am building a new P.C., but it will not be done for a while. Month or two I think.
P.S.S. My computer is an compaq AMD 500, PCI interface.
192 RAM. Plenty of harddrive space. 32 Meg N-videa graphics Card.
Windows 98 2nd ed. About 3 Gigs of just BG2 installed at this point.

P.S.S.S. None of my other games are running right either. Thanks Folks

One idea, and if all else fails

You will be able to transfer all the mods and saved games into the new pc, after it's built.

P.S.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling windows media player and direct x. You'd be surprised how many games use wmp as a short-cut in coding. I'm not sure if bg2 did.
P.S.S.
What os are you putting onto the machine you're building? If it's xp, you might just want to "upgrade" your existing machine. I've run xp on an old p2/366 before, and was astonished that it did all right. That is a radical solution, but it would almost definitely fix your problem. If it comes to that, repost.

Because this sounds more like a tech question than a BG2 one, I'm going to move it to the tech forum. I'll leave a redirect in BG2, however, so you'll get the benefit of two forums' worth of experts. :)

updatin

For new game you need to update your compter to windows XP. Read the game requirement to see if any use 98 it would surprise me. I had to update to win xp for the LOA updated game and you propably need XP too. But with a compact computer you need to buy XP from compact to have a compatible XP window. Don't ever buy from a custom computer manaufacturer again because of the pain to update it.

As far as I know only Half Life 2 and Doom 3, or at most the titles from after mid-2004 do not support 98, so I don't know what you are trying to say.

Xp

The game itself doesn't require XP... If fact, it's ok with win95!

I was suggesting the os change just because that would "iron out" the problems because of the fundamental differences between the two would probably require a fresh install of whatever the offending software is. If the msn stuff if buggy on 98 (knowing microsoft's policy of abandoning older customers, I wouldn't be surprised) and the hardware support is lacking on 98 (for your Sony) then a newer os just might clear up the issues.

Thanks folks for the time in trying for me. My computer basically died and then died again. Then I had kill it. It is now resurected with a windows XP os.
I want to keep playing my game, but I think I might wait because, I am building a really hot P.C. right now, it may be a few months but don't know about all that. I was thinking, can I install BG2 then BG2 throne of Bhaal. Then Override the game folder with my old 98 2nd ed. game folder all modded and stuff?

Thanks, been gone a while, good to be back.

Yes

Sure you can... You may want to re-run the config after the copy...

In fact, you don't even need to install it on your new pc... Just copy the files over and edit your baldur.ini file to point to the right places...

Ok...

When you say you have the old game on disk, do you mean the saved game, or did you burn everything to some cd's or a dvd?

You kind of need everything... At least you should have everything except for the CD1, CD2, etc. directories...

As far as the Baldur.ini instructions, try opening it in notepad and take a look...

HD0=c:\Program File\Black Isle\BG2
will be the line that you'll probably want to change, to wherever you're putting the main files... The easiest thing to do, though, is just copy the whole thing into the exact same directory, then all the pointers will still work...

Oh, you will have to start up BG2 with the bgmain.exe file, instead of your baldur.exe.
