Use All - overides spell restrictions?

Post by Deadalready »

I've been thinking about making a Gnome Thief/Mage like Jan except not as carp and there's quite a few possibilities with a class like this not to mention being able to get a natural intelligence of 19.

Now gnomes naturally become illusionists as mages which isn't bad at first until one realises there's no necromatic spells (which are the best in my opinion) but with Use Any Item does that negate class restrictions?

You wan't be able to learn tham, even with UAI.
But you should be able to cast them from scroll.

Yeah it kinda sucks not being able to get Death or the Finger thereof... but I've never really used them except against large groups of weak enemies (death spell) and extremely powerful enemies (Finger of Death)

With my gnome illusionist, I really missed those spells....along with skull trap. I didn't like the idea of it all, so I eventually started a new character. The 19 Int was quite nice tho. :D

Mainly you miss Adhw, great area dmg, party friendly.
But 19 int isn't a great feature because it doesn't add anything to your char.
But on the other hand you can still cast a lot of good spells, you get bonus spells due to specialization (an extra high lev. spell is a great asset!), so why should you give up your idea?

I missed Death spell. No more summons with that and my solo thief illusionist was often overrun by enemies.

The 19 intelligence does not add the bonus spell. Have a specialist mage adds the bonus spell.

You may be right. (I must be thinking of wisdom maybe?)
Doesn't Int effect how many spells you can store in your spell book as well? I'm not at home, so I don't have my manual handy.

It does affect the number you can memorize, but it check only when you try to learn a new one (and it will be easier to learn too), but nothing that a good potion of genius can't override.

Int affects the number of spells you can have in your spell book, how big % chance you have of learning it, gives a Lore bonus and decides what level you can cast spells of.

Wisdom gives extra *Priest* spells.

I've never tried a Genius potion to cast above-level spells when I had them. Is this documented?

No. You can only use higher level spells when you reach the correct level. For this reason, a potion of genius would not help you because intelligence does not affect what level you can memorize.

But I've used it plenty of times to learn extra spells, because back in SOA you could not remove spells. Ahhh, gotta love the loopholes. ;)

A 19 INT allows for an unlimited number of spells/level to be memorized. It's a pretty nice feature, unless you have ToB installed, where you can just erase spells if you have too many.

True... but if all spells were good and useful (Infravision? Detect Evil? Don't make me laugh!) it could be a good advantage to have 19 Int.

Hey, never dis detect evil when I am around. Detect evil WAS a good spell in BG1 if you had a paladin. Everytime you got to a new area, you could cast that spell and see who was in the area. Now that BG2 doesn't have stacks of maps, it is not as useful. Now I know some of you would say that you already know everything about the map anyway, but for first time players it is a good spell.

Because the check is made in the moment you want to learn a new spell, you only need to have the 19 int. in that moment, thus a good potion of genius will let you learn as many spells you like even with a lower int..
thus for your mage raise Wis., as it is much more useful when casting wishes spells.

Not all spells, but I remember wanting more spells than someone like Jan (16 INT) can memorize. I think I ran kinda low at 5th level.
