If you don't go to the underdark when that dude in the asylum tells you about the gate and instead you go with him, do you miss it out? Or visa-versa?

if your dude is saemon, you can reject his offer, take jon's key, and enter underdark via portal beside the "lab," i believe

But by going with Saemon, you get to travel to the Sahougin City.

and if you don't have ToB installed, than you just MUST go with Saemon. well, maybe you don't exactly have to go with him, but still... you MUST go with him!! trust me, you wouldn't want it the other way

Why?
Stinkly fish city is for getting the wave blade, and the cloak of mirrrors, two of the best items in the game, and the best spear in the game for jaheira, but the mirror portal doesn't work anymore?

Oh yeah, sabre showed me how to get the original cloak of mirrors back, my favorite item in the game...obviously I play magic user.

and lets not forget the the fish city is 1 of the most bbeautifull area's of BG2.

character of the whole game.
