Tech help with viewable game area needed

Post by dragon wench »

I just went out today and replaced my 4-year-old video card with a shiny, new Nvidea GeForce FX 5200. The difference is completely stunning! It is like having a new computer, load times are *much* faster, my FPS problems have vanished and the graphics look just beautiful. Even with full shadows, maximum distance and full pixelation shading on, my machine is barely breaking a sweat. Needless to say, I'm ecstatic, especially since the card was a mere $65 Cdn worth of investment.

So, this being the case, I decided to bump up my resolution (in the game options panal) from 800 by 600 to 1024 by 768. Looks gorgeous.. but one minor problem. Along the right side of my screen is an empty black space of about an inch. I have in the last few months bought a bigger monitor ( 17 inch LCD flat panal), so I think I just need to adjust a setting that will make Morrowind properly fit my screen. I just don't know what that setting is.

If anyone can help, I'd be most appreciative.

@Fable, I was not sure whether to put this here or into the Tech forum, so place as you see fit.

Cheers! :)

This probably should go in Tech. I'll move it there, with a redirect.

What's the price for the card?

Thanks Fable, the card was just $65 Cdn. I didn't want to pay much more than that, I couldn't really see the point given the age of my computer, but as I said, I'm *really* impressed so far. I think part of what makes such a huge difference is that the card has a 128 MB processor built into it, because the card istelf is only 64 mb (my previous card was 32 mb).

I've also noticed that my overall speed has increased even just surfing on the net. This of course makes obvious sense now that I think of it, but I hadn't anticipated it, so it's another nice perk

Is it only in Morrowind there is this "black line", or is it all the time?

Monitor settings are often optimized for their optimal resolution, say 1024x768. I'm currently on 1200x900 and optimized my screen for it, and if I change the resolution to anything else, I start seeing black edges.

You'll just have to adjust your monitor for 1024x768.

@Rookierookie,
thanks, now all I need to do is figure out where my monitor settings are hidden  :D

DW, if Ned Flanders doesn't show up in a day or two, you might want to PM/email him over this. I know he's a computer tech, and he's successfully pointed out problems in this forum before that were absolutely correct, for me. The guy's quite brilliant.

Well - if it is only Morrowind then I would somehow doubt it was the monitors settings which needed to be changed. If it was it would have been an issue on more things.

What happens if you change to another resolution? Is it only 1024x768 which is the problem?

Hmm.. I just changed the resolution to 1152 by 864 and now the game fills the whole screen, as normal, again.
I was a bit reluctant to put the resolution as high, but performance still seems very good, so I'll probably stick with this.

@Fable. Nonetheless, I may well contact Ned. If nothing else I'm really perplexed as to why I had the black edge with the other setting, so I'd like to satisfy my curiosity.

btw, thanks everyone :)

Hi DW :)

Check in your monitor manual, it should state optimal settings and refresh rates for your particular model. I have a NEC LCD 1760NX 17", and the optimal settings for this monitor are 1280 x 1024 with a refresh of 60Hz.

Did you set the ingame resolution any higher. Try making changes to Morrowind's resolution and you may see a difference, that way you could keep 1024x768 in windows.

Ah DW, still having troubles? Sorry I didn't hear the summons earlier but I've given the imps the week off.

Anyway, is it working proper now?

Hi Ned, lol! ;)

Actually, I haven't had the chance to experiment further because we have been victim to Sassar or something similar... Something screwed up our networking system and my partner found he was unable to get on the internet. Assuming that the new card might have messed some settings up, my SO decided to reinstall Windows on my machine... However... the desktop keeps on shutting down after error messages. *sigh* I'm presently using his laptop which, at the moment, is seemingly able to maintain an internet connection.

As I mentioned above, I had gotten the higher resolution to work, but the one I first tried left me with a black space of about an inch to the right side of my screen. Since the other setting works fine, and gives even higher resolution it is less of an issue at this point. Basically, I'm still just curious as to why it was happening.
