What is the best AD&D game out there?

Post by Baassie »

Until now I've only played baldur's gate 2. I've read a lot about the other AD&D games out there but which one do U think is best?
Please, only choice one of the following:

- BG
- BG2
- Icewind Dale
- Planescape: Torment

Is it worth it to buy Icewind Dale AND the expansion pack, or should I just wait for Neverwinter Nights?! Thoughts anyone?

BG2 is a great game, but I don't think that there is another CRPG out there with such a dense atmosphere and extremely cool characters like in Planescape Torment.

Where else can you travel around with an immortal main char, a cursing flying skull, a succubus or a modron (creature from the mechanus plane)?

BG2 and Torment are about equal in my book, and both are at the top. I wish BG2 had the character depth and interaction of Torment, but BG2 has a much more vast world to explore. Take the best of the two games, and at some point in the future, Black Isle is going to have one amazing game.

Here's to wishing I could find Annah somewhere in Trademeet and have here join my party. I could use a REAL thief.

What about the tattoo shop? Image

Although a tattoo of greater might wouldn't be very useful without the appropriate slots. Image

Planescape:Torment is my choice for the best AD&D RPG by Interplay so far (I played all 4 games you mentioned above).
PS:T is not the "classic" RPG you may expect, but overall is an excellent game.

I'm quite new to the AD&D genre. I've only played BG2 and a little BG. So, Planescape Torment, is it like BG2? Worth buying?

Yes, Torment is well worth buying, especially since it is probably in the bargain bin by now. I see kid mentioned some older games, I would love to see the original Bard's Tale re-done and re-released.

Without doubt my answer is Baldur's Gate 2...great atmosphere, great graphics, great story, great music, great Jaheira, great game, great everything....Icewind Dale is also a superb game...I especially like the music...it´s fantastic...sets an excellent atmosphere...

Everytime someone mentions "pen & paper" D&D, I start to reminisce. We almost never used modules (couple of exceptions like Tomb of Horrors, etc.), but had a couple of DMs who created amazingly complex and immersive worlds with words. We'd focus on thought: not much hack-and-slash, a lot of puzzles to figure out. I remember very frequently on our dusk-til-dawn nights, we'd leave the gaming table and take breaks, come back, leave again for hours, trying to think our way out of what our DM threw at us. Amazing stuff. That's what none of these games do enough of in my opinion: mind games, puzzles and mental challenges.

BG2 is definitely my favorite. Planescape: Torment comes a close second. Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate were great, but not quite up to those two. As for Eye of the Beholder...I got five minutes into it and trashed it. I don't like Might and Magic VIII much, and Eye of the Beholder was just a primitive and much harder to control form of that. And Waverly, I agree. Take the great character development of Planescape and the vastness and gameplay of BG2...and you got yourself a game of the decade. A venture into the planes would be a great sequel to BG2, as leveling much more would make the characters too powerful for anything on Toril.

So overall, I think I should buy Planescape: Torment if I follow the advice. Is cheaper at the moment too. But what's so great about the game? Is it big? BG2-big?
