Anybody tried this, Jon's a walk in the park.
Since you can't fight him directly, walk everyone down their own branches. With your mage, cast a wizard eye and move it near Irenicus. He'll start blasting the eye with everything he has without any harm (until he Mazes the eye). Meanwhile equip your mages quickitem slots with time stop, breach, gate. cast simulacrum. move your 'copy of the mage' near Irenicus (you should have the wizard eye still so you can see him - keep everyone else out of sight). Cast Time Stop, then Breach, then Gate and last but not least a couple of fireballs. (from memorized / staff of magi etc..?) The spells should take on simultaniously cancelling all his spell protections and hurting him a bit with those fireballs, maybe even cancelling a spell or two he might be casting at the time. Then just cast everything you got with 'copy of the mage' and watch with the wizard eye how Irenicus gets his butt kicked by Pit Fiend.
I used Imoen for the wizard eyes & edwin for the rest of the stuff. I don't know will you get any exp. out of Irenicus since Pit Fiend killed him =), but none of my guys didn't even lose a single hitpoint & I think I casted 3 spells with my mages. (1 x simulacrum and 2 x wizard eye)
It was my first try and I was a bit surprised how easy it was. (AD&D core rules)

Irenicus on the trees IMO was waaaaaaaaay to easy.
I killed him with just Edwin and a bit of help from my pc fighter.
Basicallyy Edwin kept on castign time stop, breaching his defenses, and had my fighter take all the damaging spells, although irenicus managed to maze edwin but he came back in a second. Using the spell trap from staff of magi made it sooo easy. I could spell battle him and his 8 and 9th level spells with some scrolls and pwoerful magic items.

Spell hold irenicus would have been easy but my party was so level drained it wasent even funny
my fighter guy had 17 hps through most of spellhold
The Tree of life one was easy, just moved my guys out of his range and threw in about 4 cloud kills just to make sure he would go down
the final one was the hardest
i was about ready just to give up but finaly i just spawned 5 shambling mounds had them take care of the summoned guys, hid down on a stairway, about about 5+ mins i came out and just rushed the bum
I lost Cernd and Keldorn from my party somehow
and Jaheria and Nalia were dead by the time i finished him off... I want ot play again
but i really only like fighter chars i just cant handle magic
