Fwel, you can't come into a well established community and hope to change its nature. I won't lie and say SYM has never had frictions or spats, I won't tell you it is some kind of virtual utopia, because that is not the case. However, as CM states, there are some closely knit friendships here, friendships that extend well beyond SYM. Many people have actually met in person and have formed real life friendships, others have known one another for up to four or five years via instant messaging and email.
While SYM's atmosphere has changed and evolved (not that I want to embark on another of *those* discussions), one trait that has always been a constant in varying degrees is an irreverant humour, and a refined deadly wit. But you have to remember, for the most part (occasionally there are exceptions) such posts are not intended maliciously, and the members engaging in this kind of banter are more than likely chatting on MSN at the same time.
You don't seem a bad guy (?), so grab yourself a glass of your favourite beverage, relax, and above all, have fun
