Alignment

Post by Johan »

What is alignment? I mean the first part : True, Lawfull or Chaotic.
How do u keep it up? What makes them change?
I had a lawfull evil monk intimidating a poor commoner out of money and i lose points towards chaotic. I could be wrong but intimidating and threatening o poor defenseless commoner sounds evil to me...

Well - Lawful and Chaotic are the degrees of the alignment which deals with the laws (heh).
So a lawful character follows the law whereas a chaotic character doesn't, but does more what he pleases. A neutral is a mixture amongst these two extremities.

So how do you earn points towards lawfullness?
I've seen points towards good or evil but other than that...

we had this subject pop up in a thread a bit back, we havent yet found an answer to how you turn to lawful. chaotic is easy enough as well as good/evil though.

I don't think there is any highly repeatable way of becoming lawful, AFAIK the and place I may have become lawful is through dialogue (and modules :P ).

I had some lawful points in SoU dealing with kobolds at the tavern: I simply talked to them and then I kept my promise. But it's kind of no-repeatable episode. I mean, I'm always worried (playing a Monk, for example) to make anything that would change my alignment to chaotic because it is very easy (sometimes everyone can be a little chaotic, only to have some fun) and quite impossibile to revert the process.

I was about to start a new topic but I thought someone had already asked this question. I've just started Chapter 3 and not once have I found a situation where I can change my Lawful-Chaotic scale. Good-Evil is easy - you do jobs for free or give poor people money and you're good, you threaten people and you're evil. But I don't know how to make myself Chaotic or Lawful.
Give us the gate key.
I have no gate key.
Fezzik, tear his arms off.
Oh, you mean this gate key?

Well i don't like whole aligment thing that is in NWN. I openly admit that i am only familiar with first edition D&D rules, other version knowledge depends on certain game. But as far as i know aligment shouldn't change becuse it something that ''gods'' have given you at your birth. If aligment somehow changes it must be either miracle or extremely odd and rare thing.

It is also quite hard to play as true neutral character, would it have been so hard to create certain dialoque options for them that wouldn't change aligment well there was few but those were mainly just something odd.

My avatar changes with my mood. If it is dark and ugly then I am not very happy and often as grumpy as bear. If it is something else then it means that i might be less ''me''.

Alignment isn't given at birth, even in 1st edition rules. It is possible for a Paladin to lose his/her powers in 1st edition if he/she ceases being LG. But you are right about the True Neutral alignment.

I have never liked the D&D concept of alignment. But in NWN it depends on who wrote the module whether alignment shift is implemented. Most mods don't bother with this because it takes a lot of scripting. I think the Witches' Wake mod goes out of its way to try to implement role-playing features like alignment shift, but most others do not. And the standard campaign doesn't have much on the Lawful/Chaotic scale, as has been noted.
