I know what they do, but does anyone really thing they are worth it?
has anyone tried them in combat and had a lot of sucess??
or are they just a waste of time, and a spell.

Tsk, it is for PvP. Using counterspells and sorceror can make it so that a wizard can do nothing, and either kill the wizard with his/her remaining spells (very slowly) or engage in combat which it will win if it took a level of pally and monk.

You know that to counterspell a spell, you need the a spell that is described as the counterspell for that spesific spell (omg messy words
)
I'll try again: spells can only be countered with a spesific spell, for example, a fireball needs a fireball to dispell while a energy drain needs greater restoration (just examples).
So a wizard, with some spell slots and a large difference of spells would beat the sorc since he can only counter those spesific spells. It goes the same way for a wizard if he counters the sorc.

Mord's Disjuction and (Greater) Dispel Magic are both universal counters. Regardless, there are very few spells that are tier one for pvp, a sorceror needing not to prepare them, can have all of these ready to counter, so either the wizard will be forced to use less powerful spells, or be countered.
