What have I done to upset Virgil?

Post by siamsa »

I is officially confuzzled. When I hover over Virgil, he apparently has a reasonable opinion of me (about 65 or so) and is courteous. Then I get into a fight and suddenly he says something along the lines of "I dislike you too much to ever consider joining you" and starts attacking me. There's no way to make him stop, and myself or my other follower always ends up killing him. I'd prefer to avoid this - I like having Virgil in my party.

Has anyone else had this problem? What's set him off, and how do I stop it from happening?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Whom are you fighting? And were you careful not to accidentally target Virgil?

No, I definitely didn't target Virgil - he was nowhere near me at the time. I've equipped him with some ranged capabilities (bows and guns) and asked him to stay well back from me.

It happened first when we got ambushed on the way back from stealing the funerary stone. I reloaded a saved game, tried again, and this time made it back to Tarrant without getting attacked. All went well, and I think we might even have had a fight with a guard in the city with no problems, until I went into the first level of Schuyler's and got attacked there. Then Virgil did his little routine and started attacking me again. :(

Any idea why that happens?

My guess is that you’re using a Mechanise Machine Gun; with my games I noticed that simply using this weapon would cause my party members to slowly shift towards hatred of me. There are possibly other fast fire weapons that may trigger this but this is the one I’m most aware of and avoid using.

My solution to you is if any of your party members is a leaning towards unsavoury, drop the others at the start of a battle and let hate guy engage an enemy. Tell them to back off and they will be killed eventually by the monster, once they’re dead kill the monster and resurrect your friend with a scroll (works even at 100% tech) and they’ll instantly have 65 courteous reaction towards you.

Especially good for party members like Sog Mead and dog who never give you chances to increase their reactions and naturally start at 50 or less reaction.

Nope, afraid that can't be it either. I haven't even seen a machine gun. I'm just wielding a sword (the one you get for taking the trait "child of a hero") and Virgil has a longbow and a pistol. My other follower is, I believe, currently wielding a large hammer.

Besides, I haven't been able to afford a ressurect scroll yet. :(

Any other suggestions?

I know that if you wield a ranged weapon and hit a follower by mistake, the follower will get ticked off (that's probably what's going on with Deadalready and the mechanized gun). But maybe the reverse is true as well, and if Virgil hits you or a follower with a ranged weapon, he'll get mad. Or maybe his weapon is critically failing (which might happen with him and a gun) and he's considering that to be an attack from you.

So I'd suggest you have Virgil use a neutral or magical melee weapon and see if that improves anything.

Fair enough. I'll give it a go and see how it works.

Thanks.

Virgil attacked just because your doing evil thing and he wont like anything like that. So to prevent that do fighing in the open field because you and him will earn more alignment +. If he attackes anything press F5 to stop it.

Virgil is a neutral guy, he's one of the kinds of people that doesn't care about your good or evil.

Well, good that Virgil's neutral - I suppose that since he's the first and easiest follower to get it makes sense since you have the option to be evil. Thanks for the tip about the F5 though. I didn't know about that one. :)

As it is, I've lost my patience with him and started a new game. This time I'll refuse that quest and see if that works better.

Cheers to everyone who's helped out. Have a happy Yule.
