Game freezing
Game freezing
My game is unplayable. It freezes almost immediately upon starting it. I have version 1.59, wasnt sure how to patch it but still it shouldnt freeze all the time.
I saw some older posts about it and I wonder if the issue has been resolved and there is a way to fix it?
Oh, and I do not have a minimum specs computer. I have 1048mb ram 256 mb video card and AMD64 3000 cpu. I am running windows xp sp2.

There were some problems with Audigy sound cards and NWN, but I'm not sure if that is your problem. Can you run it through mobo sound? If so, try that.
Otherwise, I don't really know... Update drivers, make sure your DirectX is up-to-date, set your screen resolution to lowest, along with the other configurable stuff within the game (use the NWNConfig exe).
Cheers,
TGHO

It was the sound as you said! Thanks. I saw a thread over at bioware forums about running with sound disabled and what to do if it worked like that so now the problem is fixed and the game runs perfectly on max resolution and best graphics!!
Thanks alot for pointing me in the right direction

I have norton internet security and windows xp sp2. I am thinking it might be windows xp sp2 thats causing the problem cause I have seen many people have problem with sp2. Many people dont have any problems though so it must be in combination with something else.
I'll try your suggestion.
Thanks

Try disableing the "Auto Protect" (I think its name is) feature in Norton Internet Security.
It is the feature that continuesly scans your harddrive for malicious files - so it hasn't got any influence on the firewall or antivirus.
I'd never ever ever recommend turning off the firewall or antivirus features while connected to the Internet in any form. But the Auto protect has little influence on this - it is more ment if you get infected by removable medias (discs, CD/DVDs etc)
I've had problems getting (some) games to run with it on, so it might help you as well.
But I can't remember 100% if the feature is called "Auto Protect"; but try looking at the settings for one that matches my descriptions (scanning harddrive continuesly).
But I'm a work now - and am out of town for the weekend, so I can't check my own computer at home, but can do so sunday evening (local time) or monday if there is a need.

Yeah, as Xandax said, disable the Nortons Auto Protect. I have this on my machine as well, and always disable it before playing any game (one of the problems with Norton's products).
If you are running XP, hit ALT-CTRL-DEL to bring up the Task Manager and look for a process called NPROTECT. Force end it, and you should be fine.
And as Xandax and I said before - disconnect from the web before disabling your firewall and anti-virus!
Cheers,
TGHO

The windows firewall in XP is not the best product around and you should not use it anyway. Replace it with Zone Alarm or Tiny's Firewall (although Tiny's is quite complex).
Personally I only use Norton products as a stop-gap on a games machine. They tend to be over-agressive in their protective measures, and force-halt a lot of game components.

The Auto Protect should not be disabled from the CTRL-ALT-DEL/Taskmanager menu.
It can be disabled from the security menu in the Norton Internet Security/AV settings.
This feature dosen't hinder neither the Firewall in NIS nor the AV - it simply terminates the function that continuesly scan your harddrive for mallicious files on "changes", so there is no need to disconnect from the Internet while doing that.
Just make sure you don't disable the firewall while connected the Internet, and that you don't download e-mails without your antivirus.

Hi guys
Have now got a brand spanking new computer so that I can enjoy this game to its fullest. On configuring my computer, it tells me my processing speed is not good enough, that I should adjust my settings but allowed me to continue to start playing.
First time the game started up, it did not fill the whole screen. The game crashed as soon as I entered the town, saying there was an error and that I should send a report to Microsoft.
I loaded up again, and was allowed to play with a full screen and got a little further. It then crashed again with the same message.
Is it my settings which would cause it to crash? I am running a Pentium 4, with masses of memory, but one of my specs was a bit low. I did think it was higher than my five year old computer which barely matches a Pentium 3, but runs the game perfectly, albeit rather slowly.
Please can anyone advise? I am so disappointed, I configured this computer so that it would run the game at top settings, and now it won't even let me play one game. It also worries me for future games, the specs should allow me to load up games five years from now, and have no problems running them. I have already noticed one of my older games having a time lag on switching menus, so I am concerned I've been ripped off with a naff machine.
This computer will never be connected to the internet, so it has no firewalls, no protection on it at all, but I don't think that's the problem anyway.
Can anyone advise please?
