OT- But it has some relation

Post by Anonononomous »

I was just at the STALKER website and I found this funny quote:
We come out of presumption that the player plays as stalker - a mature, thoroughly prepared person, living in the Zone. He can be compared with a soldier who is trained to accomplish a mission. The soldier is trained for the task, but when on a mission, everything depends on himself. In the course of accomplishing the objective he cannot improve his skills drastically. That is why, unlike other games, the player, for instance, does not start playing as a character whose submachine-gun-holding hands tremble or who cannot hit a rat with his sword 9 out of 10 times, and within the next 10 years of the game time he becomes a demigod hitting a bird in the sky with his eyes closed and evading machinegun volleys.
So if you're sick of becoming a god, you might want to look at this game.

Good advice, but it really doesn't belong in this forum. It goes under Games Discussion--which is where I'm forwarding it. :)

lol, fair play to you for moving it, but does it not remind you of morrowind in the slightest  :D :p
Mag: Don't remember much at all of last night do you?
Me: put simply.... No :D
Mag: From what I put together of your late night drunken ramblings? Vodka, 3 girls, and then we played tic-tac-toe and slapped each other around.

There's a subset in the playing community that wants to turn all games into godfests, where the only challenge is how fast they can get through it killing everything that moves. The quote applies beautifully to them, rather than to any specific game. Hopefully you can see that, but iit's not my problem if you don't.

Fair enough. I figured it might get moved. I still think it's funny when thinking about Morrowind, though. I don't play all that many RPGs, but I know some of my characters in KotOR weren't godlike.

I agree, it does have some close bearing on Morrowind--but it's such a great subject, it deserves more exposure. I hope more people will comment, here, on the way they play and others play, in the presence of enough cheese and options to create impossibly powerful characters.

The godliness of a playing character really depends on the player, IMO, rather than the game in most cases. Like you, I didn't build a god in KotoR, but it was easy to do. The same applies to BG2, where certain professions (like the kensai/mage) are particularly overpowered. Even more so, Morrowind. To avoid this, I never sell used soul gems, use mods that cut down on the effectiveness of spells, and dispose of modded uber-items in a river. I want the sense of accomplishment that comes with overcoming a challenge. :)

Err, you realize the Morrowind forum seems to have more traffic, no?

Unless you get to see some super secret numbers I can't.

You might have gotten more posts in Morrowind, but more than likely it would have started moving almost immediately into questions having nothing to do with the topic--a problem that seems to belong to the Morrowind forum, and nowhere else. Still, I'll have it moved to SYM. That'll get you more posts.

I like becoming a god... WITHIN PLOT.

These games got it right:
1. Populous the begining, where you start out as a powerful shamaness who is aspiring to become a god through her magic.
2. Age of wonders, where you start as an immoral mage, one of the few, the elite, who conquers cities becuase their inhabitants can provide you with the mana needed to fuel your abilities, and learn new ones (a hero generates about 10 or so mana a turn, a basic spell costs about that much... infusing yourself with a high level ability can cost hundreds... same goes for magical artifacts, which require the economy of several bustling cities completely diverted to it over a period of time).
3. Spellforce the order of dawn. Where powerful mages of the past became immoral, and wrought a cataclysm that destroyed most of the world, they created artifical beings who were immortal, and bound to a rune. One of the greatest of those mages, who is one of the few who survived the cataclysm, has taken the rune of one of the more powerful rune warriors and modified him so that he is now the carried of his own rune. No longer a slave, and at a better starting point then the mages themselves were, not to mention he can control other less versatile rune warriors.
4. Kohan immortal soveriens. First the creator made the world, he populated it with kohan, each bound to an indestructible amulet containing their soul. The kohans had many powers, and could shape shift over time to suit themselves. They found out different shapes are good for different things (elven like for magic, etc), and that they can have children when in different shapes, except those children are mortal. If a kohan's body is phyiscally destroyed (which they found out soon as some started to cause violence unto eachother and their descendants), they will come back by possesing and transforming (while kinda fusing, not suppressing) one of their descendants when he/she wears the amulet. Kohan forget everything when they "die", but will remember over time (XP per minute thing), the fury of battle sparks memories quickly aswell, allowing them to recall the various powers the developed over the eaons. (so when you level, it actually makes SENSE, you are remember thosands of years of developing control over your shapeshifting, magic, etc...)
5. Black and white, while the game sucked, you started as a god and gained godly power. cool games.

I have to agree with this quote really.. its just stupid to have your character, who is immortal, not because of a plot reason, but because it is player controled (its not total immersion), and who startes out WEAKER then your average sickly child (in most games like that farm animals can kill you at lower levels, so can random village children), and through killing random sentient beings who are fine to kill because they look different becomes a god. They are also NEVER wise about their attempts at aquiring power, instead of learning magic or the like they go around killing all the bad mages with their swords (which is so easy considering the powers they are supposed to weild which makes one wonder why a hero is needed), gain skillpoints, and while often confronted with options to get real power (like, having a good wizard friend), do not take it.

PS. what is that stalker website and where can i find it?
I do not have a superman comples; for I am God, not superman!
