Although I don't really ever played that game, I will answer you since no one else did.

Pen & Paper is as the words imply: you do it with paper (either rules, or to make notes and such) and pen (to write things down on the afore mentioned paper).

There are various rulebooks (some are real BOOKS!) that each deal with certain elements of the game. The total set of rules is the AD&D game. Unlike with the computer games based on these rules, you have every piece of information written down - one player, who is the Dungeon Master (or DM) has all this available - and as the other player control a character, they will explore the adventure the DM has chosen at that instance. There are a plethora on adventures and even campaigns around from which to choose. And if the DM is creative he can create these stories and campaigns himself.

Unlike on a computer, you have to roll for combat, etc... yourself, using a variety of dice. There's a 4-sided one (D4), a 6-sided one (D6), 8-sided one (D8), 10-sided one (D10), 12-sided one (D12) and a 20-sided one (D20). Sometimes you also see a 100-sided one (D100) but this can also be emulated with two rolls of a D10 (one to determine the 'ten' digit, another to determine the 'one' digit - note that 00 in this case means 100).

Is this helpful?
