Dungeon Crawl, Inc needs your support (spam on subject)

Post by fable »

This really doesn't belong in the Comics forum, because many SYMers, when they think of comics, think either of 1) Charlie Brown, Asterix, etc, or 2) online comics by nerds, about nerds, whose only seeming interests in life are playing RPGs and watching anime. Kayless' Dungeon Crawl, Inc, is different. It's an online comic with amusing, well-differentiated characters, and a penchant for imaginative plotting.

It also figures in two online comics polls, and doesn't come close to some truly awful garbage which regularly fills the top ten. So this is my appeal, to you, to read DCI; and if you like it, to click each day on the two poll links, and vote for it.

I'll gladly vote for DCI...if Kayless will repent of his shameful admiration of William Shatner first. :D

It's why they exiled him to Alaska. I understand there's a breed of deaf polar bears in his area.

That said, let's keep this thread focused on DCI. It really deserves the support, but few people know about it.

I can't vote for DCI. Main reason is the change in visual style. When I got into it..it was when it was in Baldur's Gate style..with the moose showing up and headbutting people, and that was funny. But now it looks too much like a cartoon. I mean the storyline is great, the comic is funny and all that. But when you completely change the visuals, the original feel of the comic is gone.

It's like a comic by the name of Elf Only Inn. It was really funny when each person was represented by a single pose of a single picture..and it made me think there were people in a chat room, and that's what made it funny. Now it looks like a cartoon and like they are trying to get away from the chatroom feel of it.

Hell, look at 8-Bit Theatre. It's been the EXACT SAME from day one. If they got rid of the sprites and went for hand-drawn representations of the same characters, it just wouldn't be the same for me.

Sorry, I won't vote for DCI

You actually prefer a comic that uses a single image, over and over, in each panel? I'm afraid I don't understand. This isn't the mark of a good comic; it's the mark of an artist who hasn't the industry, talent, and/or time to do anything better. How does this somehow contribute to the flavor of the comic?

It is about the overall feeling of a comic changing. It would be like if we used our GBF avatars as a comic with each picture representing one of us saying something. There is a feeling of community when we each relate a certain picture with someone. But then when the art completely changes..even though the storylines and material might be better..it breaks the original feeling.

I mean I DO still enjoy Elf Only Inn (atleast til it stopped coming out with more episodes on august 13th or 7th or something), but it just doesn't feel the same as it did.

I DO still enjoy Dungeon Crawl Inc, but it just doesn't feel the same way to me at all. It was like a brand new comic showed up and the other one died, doesn't feel the same.

Well, if you're not going to vote for it, that's your perogative.

But this thread isn't for dissent. It's for gaining support so we can get the word out about DCI, which a number of us happen to like.

So once again, I encourage everybody who hasn't read DCI to check out its webpage, and perhaps go back about 6 months, then read forward. And then, if you like it, go and vote for it. :)

Wow. Thanks Fable, I'm genuinely touched (and I don't mean in the mentally ill way). :) DCI can always use a helping hand.

Sure thing! :D Naked pictures of the cast coming up! I'll PM them at random, so you never know if you'll get Teagan, Beatrice, or maybe Durnkrag or the Archdruid.

You're not completely alone in this. There are a few readers who miss the BG/IWD sprites (though I gather they miss the nostalgia factor, rather than object to the change of style on principal). Personally I miss the ease that came with doing a sprite comic. I could get a dozen sprite issues done in the time it takes to do just one hand-drawn issue. :o The procrastinator in me finds that very appealing. However, sprites have their downsides too, mainly with facial expressions, or lack thereof. Observe:

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! You totally need to post that on the DCI page!

And actually it isnt about nostalgia really..since I only played the games like a couple years ago. :P

And if you give me a naked picture of every single character in horrible poses I would gladly vote for your comic every day for atleast a month. :)

And I mean poses like maybe the half-orc (sorry, can't remember any of their names..I read so many comics) mowing his lawn and waving happily at that blonde chick who is holding a glass of lemonade in the air a bit in response to the wave..and the dwarf is bent over pulling weeds..etc. :P

I, for one, like the non-sprite full-of-facial-expressions characters.
However I have to admit to only voting about once a week, when I check for a new comic. Twice a week at most, if there is no issue on Friday so I have to check back on Saturday ;)

I used to think they only tallied their votes once a week, until that mistake was corrected. As they do figure votes once a day, and most of us hit the computer regularly, why not vote more often? ;)
