hide in shadows bug?
hide in shadows bug?
So I am playing through IWD again and I am having a problem with hiding in shadows. The first time I do it my character hides and I am able to pull off a backstab, but when I go another time in another fight (where there are no red-circled baddies around) I can't hide again. It just makes the hide noise and says "leaving shadows" but I have already left them as my character is not translucent, even if I try a number of times. After some time passes, or I am on another location, hide in shadows-backstab works. I have HoW installed, but no official or non-official patches installed. Any ideas? This is really crimping my style...

Does it say "Hide in Shadows Failed" when your character can't hide?
I'll get "hide in shadows failed" as normal a couple times until he gets it, but what is odd is that after I leave shadows after backstabbing a baddie and the battle is over, I am unable to hide again. I click on the stealth icon, while my guy is not shadowed and when there are no bad guys around, and the message I get is "leaving shadows" though I have left a long time ago. I am not able to hide again until in a different area or at least a full night has passed. 'Tis a bummer.
And last night I installed the HoW official patch, for what its worth, but I am still having the same difficulty.

I noticed that hiding in shadows can be a little "buggy", patch or no. It tends to occur after repeated attempts, failed hiding and post back stab.
I have just soldiered on regardless, post patching too.

Fair enough and thanks for the reply, Gruntboy. I'll just have to get the most out of the invisibility spell and potions, and use hide in shadows infrequently... We shall continue to march on, for the good of the Tentowns, be stealth on our side or be we boldly in the face of evil...

Yeah, I've experienced the same bug. I hide in shadows successfully and then leave shadows for some reason. When I next hit stealth, the button turns red but nothing happens. If I hit it again, I get the leaving shadows message even though I was never in the shadows to begin with!
This is really a sucky bug. An easy way to workaround it is to hit Q for quicksave and then L for quick load. With a decent system this goes really quick. When you re-load the stealth works again.

A new answer to an old question....
I've noticed that same problem. When I hit "Hide in Shadows" the icon will highlight in red, but nothing happens. I found that if I wait about 5 - 10 sec (sometimes slightly longer), it will finally respond with a "Hide in Shadows Failed" or "Succeeded" message. There just appears to be a delay.
A little frustrating, but it does work.

Mitch:You know, um, something strange happened to me this morning... Chris Knight: Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?Mitch: No... Chris Knight:Why am I the only one who has that dream?
