Hi, I was wondering if I should memorize offensive spells or concentrate with summonings like elementals and shadows, what do you think?
Also, I'm in the Severed Hand tower and I haven't found a descent shop for spells yet, is there one nearby? I also found that ghost who sells arrows and rocks, anyone else who's willing to sell stuff?
Thanks a million
Level 5 spells
The wizard in Kuldahar eventually sells higher level scrolls, IIRC...and there are some merchants in different dungeons (after the Severed Hand).
I think, at least.
I'd suggest a balance of the two. Summons are incredibly useful in IWD, and tanks can usually take care of things, though good offensive spells can mean a lot in certain battles.

If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
Level 5 dosent offer a lot in terms of offense spells, theres cone of cold and cloudkill which stand out most, cloudkill is only good against archers and mages, cone of cold is only good against melle fighters, and your mage shouldnt be that close to use it most of the time.
Summonings are great especialy the elemental ones, so i would fill level 5 with protections, summons and divinations.

For me, fifth level mage slots are for summoning and cloudkills. I prefer elementals to shadows. There's a man in a tower in Dorn's Deep that sells elemental summoning spells.
What you memorize depends on what creatures you expect to fight and what other spells you have memorized. Cloudkill goes great with Web, Hold or Entangle, and fire elementals go well with Haste and Fireball. I rarely cast Cone of Cold, because it is difficult to cast without putting another character in the area of effect or without leaving your mage vulnerable. You could use stoneskin/mirror image, but why burn those spells just to cast a Cone of Cold? The lack (or rarity) of long-duration cold protection items and spells is another factor. It's hard to use Resist Cold and Cone of Cold in the same way as Protection from Fire and Fireball, due to the shorter duration and lesser protection of the Resist spell.
There are lots of spells in the Severed Hand. Make sure you look on all tables. There's one place to buy spells in Upper Dorn's and one place in Lower Dorn's. There's also a couple of powerful mages to fight later on who have high-level scrolls.
