Unable to install BG1

Post by Aegis »

Odd problem. I recently had the urge to go back, and play through Baldur's Gate again, but when I went to install it, the autoplay will come up, I'll choose to install, and then nothing happens afterwards. I've checked out the Bio-boards, and it seems there is an issue running it in XP (which I have).

Any suggestions?

What happens if you manual run the "setup.exe" on the disc?
I've had no problems installing BG1 on my XP version (other then some scrathes ... need to back-up all my BG1 discs).

Same problem, unfortuneatly. The thought crossed my mind to try, but only with the same result.

Oki .... so when you say "nothing happens" - does the CD spin up at all, or is it all just dead?

The CD spins, but the install process doesn't seem to load. If none of my other CDs worked, I'd assume it was just a busted drive, but I tried with both my burner drive, and DVD drive, with the same results. Spinning, but no installation.

I don't know if this will work, I've not tested it fully, but only tried somewhat....

If you have the space on your harddrive, then try to copy disc 1 (and/or more) over in a temporary directory and install from there?
It looked somewhat as it would work with me, but I canceled installation on disc two.

What I did was copy disc 1 onto the harddrive and install from there. Then it asked for disc two, and I had to point to the needed directory on disc 2 (it wasn't enough to point at the drive, it had to be the right directory), so it would possible be better to copy all discs over.

But it was a path worth exploring for you, so try and mess around with the method and see if you can get it to work for you?

About your version of BG1...

Are you running the original version of Baldur's Gate? I've found that the "Original Saga" version (which has ToTSC add to the game already) has NO compatibility problems with Windows XP. If that isn't the problem, then at least we're thinning down the possibilities.

Yeah, this is a copy before it was bundled with TotSC.

I'll try your idea, Xan.

An embarrassing story...

I see. Me, I accidentally broke one of the discs of my original copy of Baldur's Gate (yes, an embarrassing moment to this day), so I bought "The Original Saga" so I could get back in the saddle. Still, I suppose I was almost fortunate for that circumstance to come around, due to the compatibility of the newer version with Windows XP. Still, I wouldn't want you to take this as an attempt to rub it in per se, Aegis. You'd definitely want to try Xandax's strategy first, and get "The Original Saga" if that doesn't work.

Well - I've no problems getting my "old" BG1 to work with XP, so eventhough I don't know what the problem could be, it is likely not WinXP vs. BG1, but proberly some other component that is the problem.

Well, considering I don't have TotSC, getting the original saga might not be a bad idea... Maybe buy them on DVD in the process...

"The Original Saga"

In case you're wondering, here are some features that come with "The Original Saga":

- Baldur's Gate and ToTSC on 3 Discs.

- A Baldur's Gate soundtrack CD.

- A map of the Baldur's Gate region (excluding the areas in ToTSC).

- A lithograph of Sarevok, from head to toe in his full-plate, power-maddened majesty (though this has been rumored to be rare; if true, it may be a 50/50 chance).

FWIW, you might find it best to get it online.
