Elemental criticals

Post by Stilgar »

I'm carrying a shortsword that gives me +1d6 electrical damage.
With this sword i did a critaical hit for 14physical and 7electrical damage.

How can that be, elemental damage doesnt get multiplied and even if it was how can it be 7????
I do not have the touch, nor do I have the power.

What creature were you attacking? Was it vulnerable to fire? Did it have damage resistance? Were buffs used?

No buffs, no special imunities/weaknesses etc on the creature

My own experience with chest bashing and monster slicing - is that such extra damage infact *does* get multiplied.
I've seen many times that the elemental damage is higher then its nominal added value when I perform critical hits.

edit: posted editted text in my next post.

Ok but then how can it be 7???
7 Is a prime number, you cant get this with any multiplyer

Bah - you are to fast :D
Dosen't even have time to edit my post first and answer, so snipping out the answer and posting here.

For how you got to hit for 7 I can't say for sure, that depends on the workings of the NwN engine.
For instance, instead of doubeling your damage on a critical hit - it could simply double your hit die.
So a sword doing 1d8 19-20 x2 could be calcuated as a 2d16 when rolling a critical.

Edit: this would give access to "prime" numbers ;)

But this is speculation, but some observation when hitting stuff should be able to indicate if this is true.

When you get a critical, you roll damage twice (or three times etc.), as opposed to doubling/tripling etc. the damage. In D&D 3.0 there is a 'flame burst' effect which is basically just a 'flame' (1d6 extra fire damage) effect but on a critical does 1d10 damage, perhaps NWN uses this?

It might be this way according to the rules, but I don't know if this is how the NwN engien works.

Edit: but according to my own experiences - elemental damage does get affected by a critical. It seems to get affected by the critical multiplier also. But I've not really taken notes of it... could start when I get another weapon in my current game :D
(Last game I played with sonic and acid damage, and saw higher then nominal hits on criticals)
