Fighter mages are insane... they rule... hack and slash your way to baldurs gate without losing the finesse of a spellcaster.

I'm not patient enough to use a F M T but you'll get the Use Any Item proficiency when you HLA first time.

I think you will receive your first hla as soon as your char trespass the 2,95 mil xp cap from SoA, and it will be the sum of your three levels.

But I can be mistaken... :D
Flesh to stone ain't permanent, it seems.

which is best

With the fighter mage you will indoubtably rise in levels more quickly.

With the F/M/T you will have the all important thief skills.

To be honest, in my opinion at least, it is difficult to solo and use mage skills as you quite often do not have enough reaction time before being attacked to use them.

Defensive spells like stoneskin/ironskin obviously help here.

SPOILER

As a compromise, why not try a cleric/thief (you could be chaotic neutral or evil a.la. cleric of cyric) which could be really cool role playing experience. Also you would level up quickly as clerics and thieves have the lowest xp required per level, you'd have awesome magic power and could wear any leather armour type and still use all of your magic powers (and this may sound limiting but there is some cool leather around. White dragon scale, shadow dragon scale, shadow armour (earlier on), grandmasters leather (+6 I think) etc etc).

Silence yourself, hide in shadows and backstab your opponents :)

You wont be able to select any mage high level abilities save for the extra spells as a fighter/mage/thief. If you remove the cap I suggest you use SK to give your character access to them. The tripleclassers are really cool IMHO.
I have got a fighter/mage/cleric that I am planning to take through the game at some stage. I wonder what level I will finish at? I have removed the cap. Should be a real powerhouse at the end of ToB.
You can't handle the truth!
