Being an avid fantasy reader, I recently disovered RPG - it's great fun
Now playing NWN, I've got a level 5 elven fighter, but now I seem to be decreasing some skills, instead of increasing... what am i doing wrong? As I'm a bit new to RPG I'm a bit clueless in why this happens...
UPDATE: Could this somehow be caused by a spider-bite? I was poisonned by a 'bloated dire spider' earlier, and shortly thereafter my skills decreased. I remember something similar happening last time (when my wisdow decreased). I've replayed a small part of the game from a quicksave, and avoided that bite and no skill decrease... this might be related then?
Is there anyway to re-increase my skills? Or wouldn't that be necessary? tnx again
Well, it very well could happen from a spider bite. Your character icon should have some type of symbol signifying that you're poisoned. Also, your character sheet would show that you're poisoned as well. If this is the case, neutralize poison or a potion of antidote should fix the problem.
Anytime your stats go up or down, it'll be the result of a magic item, poison, or similar spell effect. Look for icons on your character portrait, or at your character sheet.

Using an antidote isnt enough. That just cures the poison and prevents further skill decrease (in the case of characters with low Fortitude saves). To get your attributes back you have to cast a restoration spell (any one) or drink a potion of lesser restoration.
I'm not sure about NWN, but I thought it was possible to have a character die from an attribute reaching zero in other Bioware / BIS games (like BG2). Huh.
Well, there's indeed a red icon in my character sheet near the 'Wisdom decreased' in 'Effects'...it ressembles a red 'X' somewhat... it's also in the right top corner all the time...
any suggestions on what anti-dode that might help?
Our post must have crossed, the potion of a lesser restorations did indeed the 'trick', tnx! My wisdom is finally back to normal
My only question that remains is why that '1' near dexterity remains/is in red. it's not a negative value and not 'curable' with that potions either... and why is my charisma '-1' not in red?
i've got the idea that a red value is caused by a spell/magic item?
the values in brackets are "attribute bonuses". each attribute is measured by numbers from 3 and up, with 10 and 11 being the "average value". meaning, the citizens that u see walking around are likely to have 10-11 points for their attributes (by actual intention of the system). following this, 10-11 for an attribute would incur a (0) bonus to skills related to it. higher attribute values will give a (+x) bonus while lower values, a (-x) bonus (effectively a penalty).
eg: case 1. Strength: 10(0) with skill Jump:4 will result in overall Jump: 4+0 = 4 case 2. Strength: 12(1) with skill Jump:4 will result in overall Jump: 4+1 = 5 case 3. Strength: 9(-1) with skill Jump:4 will result in overall Jump: 4-1 = 3
since Jump is a skill tied to the Strength attribute
further notes: in NWN red letters/number is when the value is temporarily modified downwards (due to spells, poisons etc), while green indicates modified upwards (buffed, a good addition to the base). by default, it is written in white.
To expand - the reason you have a red (1) in your dexterity is likely because you are wearing armour with a penalty check for dexterity.
You have a bonus of 2 to all your dexterity checks due to your dexterity of 15 (that is +2 - as explained by the above poster).
But if you wear amour that allowed only 1 dexterity bonus (such as Half-plate or Fullplate - wich you can see if you look at your amour description) then it will modify your dexterity bonus of +2 down to +1. (You will still get +2 when using ranged weapons however).
