To Restart or Not ... That is the QUESTION (spoilerish but not really)
i have played through the game a few times now but i am not at all happy with my original party which included a fighter, minsc, ja, aerie, imoen, val. I didn't complete everything though i was a high level and looking back really did play the game poorly.
in anticipation of ToB i have been trying to play through a second party... i did try the solo sorceror which was fun but i can't use him cuz he is too advanced to play into a party with any realism involved.... but i have been gettin bored with and/or cannot coming up with a better idea for a group that will make me happy
Well i guess my real question is that i have some control over your party in early in ToB and should i spend the time to play through it with a new party or just continue with my fighter which as a single character i am happy with....i also never found edwin/val/jan two of which i would like to add to my new party ... if i made it over it would be:
fighter (long swords)
korgan
keldron
val
imoen
edwin
i would remove the party interactions and since my guy is good i would remove happy restriction from balderdash (great site if anyone hasn't been yet.. i don't know the addy by heart but someone i am sure can direct you on another post somewhere)
do you guys think this will be possible to make up that party in ToB

You can get Edwin after doing the Mea'Var's guild quest, go to the docks and talk to Renal, second floor of the Shadow Thieves building. Jan is in the Government district, go down from the fountain, talk to him the first time or else you cannot talk to him again - at least, it happened to me. Talk to the wizard Tolgerias in the Council building in Government district to start the quest leading you to Valygar.
If you're planning to use the Happy Script overide thing from Baldurdash , I made a new version of it, I can send it to you if you want.

i know where they all are... by the way i confused val with vic... i have gotten them all in past games however the first and only one that i have a save directly prior the using the tears hasn't had any contact iwth them since i never really set foot in the gov't district except to go directly to tolograss and never explored further.. dunno why but didn't so as far as the game knows they don't exist... you think i can still choose them??
thanks i think i will save my time and not replay it.. plus i can't make up my mind anyway. I wonder if you guys have gone through whats plaguing me... i just can't make up my mind. I know i should only play with on pc but i want both an archer and a sorceror and i want 3 melee fights and then a cleric and a thief thrown in there except the only way for that to work is if i get rid of imoen for the archer and that gets rid of the theif.. i guess i could use anomen as my third tank but he has a ****ty thaco and i hate casting thaco reducing spells becasue they are shortlived and must be recast before most battles... i have figured that i could use three npc's as my tanks say keldron, minsc, korgan then use vic as my love interest and cleric then an archer cuz they are cool and my sorceror cuz they rock.. this leaves me iwth the decision between a love interest which i am sure would play a big role in ToB or making up a third pc which is a theif/cleric dualed immediatly upon entering irancius dungeon..... i can't decide and it all just gives me a headache
i think to solve my pains i will reinstall bg2 and only put in the patchs that allow for bug fixes and not keeping my party together and just put together a good party which would lower my options...
hows this
minsc
keldron
anomen
aiere
imoen
archer
not as amazing as having total choice over all the characters but i think it would be intersting to play!!!! anyone have any suggestions i am open to anything

I know how you feel EXACTLY. I've been on the verge of finishing the game SEVERAL times but always restarted due to some dissatisfaction with my party or my class.
In the end, I used this party (after restarting god knows how many times)
I use a 5 party group to make room for quest npcs.
-Stalker(me)
Katana (Celestial Fury)
Longsword (Equalizer/Daystar)
Mace (Mace of Disruption)
Shortbow (Tanshenron's bow)
Single-Weapon style
-Minsc,
Two Handed Sword (Vorpal Sword/Warblade)
Mace (Skullcrusher),
Longbow (Elven Court bow)
Two-Handed Weapon Style
-Jaheira
Quarterstaff (Staff of Rhynn)
Sling (Arla's Dragonbane)
-Viconia (or Anomen)
Flail (Flail of Ages)
Shield (Shield of Balduran/Harmony)
Sling (Everard's Sling)
-Imoen (Yoshimo prior to Chapter 3)
Quarter Staff (Staff of Magi)
Shortbow (Gesen's Shortbow)
I found this party quite nice, with plenty of offensive and defensivee capabilities for nearly all types of enemies (melees, casters, boss types, golems etc..).
The lack of a high level thief doesnt really hurt the game much because there are lots of items that augment trap detection/pick pocketing/open locks.
Each one has is capable of melee and range attacks, so I can pull out a member out of a furball and engage from a distance while recuperating.
In addition to the Viconia and Imoen,
the melees can cast their own buff spells (armor of faith, bless, resist elements, spell deflection) and debuff spells (insects, miscast magic, doom).
Anyway, try this setup if you want. Also, I'm not as expereinced with the details as others here, so if anyone has suggestions, im pretty much open to em too
PS I always play human

I've restarted the game (before finishing) at least 50 times due to "dissatisfaction" with my party. It's not that I'm bad at party configuration; on the contarary that is what I like most about the game and I think my parties through for hours an hours, taking into account every advantage and disadvantage. My problem is more that I miss the NPCs I don't bring along and get a bit tired of those I currently play with. So I restart another party, plays on and soon miss those NPCs I previously had. The obvious solution would be to play several parties simultaneously, but I find this a bit confusing (Have I already done this quest? Didn't I just spoke to that person?).
Actually, I did the same with BG1 and TOSC. I only completed the game, say five or six times, and I have a calculated my playing time to at least 1000 hours (yes, I'm a fanatic - aren't we all?).

As most of the NPCs are dual classed they will cover the bulk of what you need in only a small party:
Aerie Mage/Cleric
Yoshimo Bounty Hunter/Thief
Nalia Mage/Thief
Imoen Mage/Thief
Jan Illusionist/Thief
Jaheira Fighter/Druid
Anomen Fighter/Cleric
Assuming you want a party of six, you could have your back line as Imoen or Nalia, Aerie, and an Archer, which will give you the skills of two mages, a thief a cleric, and a Ranger, and your front line tanks combined of three of Mazzy or Minsc or Korgan or Keldorn or Anomen or Jaheira. With Anomen or Jaheira you will have the additional Cleric or Druid abilities.
I am using the smallest party possible at the moment but picking up and dropping of NPCs with each quest.
My main character is an avenger, currently accompanied by Jaheira and Yoshimo. With just these three I have mage, druid, thief and three fighter capabilities. It is proving interesting....
Isn`t this fun?

@Yshania:
I like the Avenger kit a lot, but a would hardly say it gives you mage capacities. A few low level spells, that's all. The Avenger's main advantage, IMO, is his Sword Spider form - excellent for hacking through ennemy mage's stoneskins (five attacks), then poisoning them to hinder further spell casting.
Playing with a party of three or four PCs/NPCS is a lot easier than a full party, as you can eliminate most weaknesses by choosing the very best NPCs for that particular party, pick the very best equipement for each character and so on. Not to forget, you level up a lot faster. A full party is more fun, though.

this game can get to you at times... the first time through its just for fun but since then i need to be perfect in every way... the party i have, the way i fight a battle.... when i soloed my sorceror i got alot of satisfaction in my ability to go through 90% of my battles without taking any damage. I really like summoning my spiders and webing my enemies... and then later sword of mordenkainen's are amazing melee attackers... equal in most party to my tanks in every aspect, the occasional earth elemental and then later on (well it didn't take that long) skeleton warriors kinda made my spiders obsolite but i still used them for my affinity for them. I had by far the most fun with him and choosing my spells was the best part.. i spent hours pouring over hte manual and learning about every single spell... my first try through i was ignorant to 80% of the spells true values and now i am familiar with them all.
i also kinda came up with this party however it will not work out since korgan and a bad reaction to aeire however it seems solid for my playing style since i enjoy low thaco melee
keldron
minsc
korgan
aerie
imoen
sorceror
then there is this one
keldron
minsc
anomen -- i really dislike him but he has his strong points and he is good which fits my style
imoen
archer
sorceror
with this one i have covered all my bases though anomen is no comparion to korgan however if i need him to hack it out i'll just cast a thaco reducer which clerics have an abundance of.. they really do cuz while i was researching cernd who i later found to be totally useless since i could make him decent but for one it would disable his spell casting until i dispell champion strength and he would take up all my good thaco and ac reducing items which really should be spread around equally... with this party i would have a happy group since i will not use the happy patch at balderdash because any form of cheating at least it has been my experience has lowered my desire to continue on with the party appealing as it may be. Also i would have my archer and my sorceror my two most favored classes... mazzy is basically an archer but she uses shortbows which i couldn't seem my archer doing and she doens't get bonuses to her hit and thaco... also for all those who wanna play and archer but are lacking good arrows early on just use jan with two potions of master theievery and steal all hte arrows and good stuff from the theif above the guy who starts chapter two.. if forget how to spell his name out ... there are tuns, i mean tuns of arrows of piercing and arrows+2 also some other decent stuff also take jan and steal the good armor from the armorer in wakeen's prominade... it will really set you up and there are great shields !!!!! Kinda a little ungood for my good party but who cares... it save my money and i can do a few quests that pay well get my shield of balderan and proceed to save imoen to level her up quickly. My first run through i did a tun of quests prior to proceeding along the story and imoen is saved right by using the tears at level 15 which still pisses me off to this day.
THIS GAME ROCKS !!!!!!!!!!
