Technical game problems

Post by Sytze »

I seem to gotten myself in some sort of problems.

Heres the story:

Since a few days we got a new comp, it has all the new stuff, you know, all those things which comes with a brand new comp :p
(including Windows XP)

So I installed BG SoA + ToB and all the official patches. After that I installed a whole list op mods, which I, if some of you think are relevant, will post later.

I started the game and no loading time problems or anything, everything works perfectly and the sound and 3d animations are even better.

So then Immie gets me outta jail and I get the character control. Now everything goes bezerk.
I cant get into my special abilties screen, mage spells or hide in shadows. Character formations dont seem to work either. I can get into spell selection, inventory, etc, just the tools at the bottom bar are acting weird. Every now and then I CAN access my special abilties, etc, but it immediatly blocks my access again... :(

So I was wondering if any of you knows the solution to this problem....

a list of mods?
ive never heard of this problem, i have to say. Were there any problems installing? In my opinion it sounds like files are missing. Maybe one of the mods (or 2 conflicting ones) have done something.

Just wondering, are you overclocking? Any stability problems beside BGII?

Maybe a list of hardware could help ;)

Hi

Overclocking means running your CPU/video card at higher clock speed than stock (set by manufacturer). Gains you performance at the expense of higher temperature and decreased stability.

The reason I suggest it is that I've had some issues trying to play BGII on a heavily overclocked Athlon XP/Nvidia GeForce 4200.

But perhaps your problem is more software- than hardware-related; a full OS reinstall can do miracles (besides being a pain in the behind).

So what you are suggesting is that my comp is too fast for the game??
I have to put the "game-speed" lower??

How do I do this with configuration??

Ohh yeah, a full OS reinstall isnt an option anymore...

Have you got the latest ToB patch? See this excerpt:

"Fixes a bug where dual-classed characters lose their inherent abilities. "

You can get the patch here

I hope that helps.

Also, it may be that there is some conflict with the mods you are using, I am sure that TDD cannot be installed with another mod that affects the dialog files. It maybe worth a full clean install of SoA and ToB without the mods, install the latest patches, and see if it happens still. Then when you reinstall your mods, check compatibility. (There is also a certain order these mods should be installed)

I have the latest patch.

But that isnt the problem, I discovered that I have the same problems, even without all those Mod's, TDD and ToB installed...

And its not only the innate ability button that isnt working, I also cant change my group formation, hide in Shadows, Search traps, etc. The whole bottom bar is acting weird...

Hmm... Maybe try a fresh install of the game only if you can't do an OS reinstall, preferably on another partition.

Also, does the problem persist if you run in 800x600 with 3d turned off?

I am trying it right now.

I will also give some information of my computer, if it will be of some help regarding my problems...

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002

Computer:
Pentium 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Clockspeed: 2.40 GHz
512 MB RAM-memory

*Edit: Upon trying to run the game without 3D turned on, the problem still occurs... :( *

Unless I missed it, I don't believe you posted what video card you're using.

When you did your uninstall, did you go through the registry and remove all references to Baldur's and Baldurs?

What's running in the background when you play BG2? Try to reduce TSRs (terminate stay resident programs, like a screensaver, anti-popup software, etc) to a minimum.

Do a clean, cold reboot before playing the game.

Just to be clear, when you said a "clean install," you went by hand into your registry, and removed all mentions of the Baldurs and Baldur's? Because some registry mentions of the game are left behind after it's removed.

I don't mean to doubt you. Just asking.

When I uninstall, I follow the uninstall procedure and then remove the whole Black Isle map itself.

Then I reinstall (mininum) and copy files from my cd to "fake" a full install. The game itself works fine, like I said, but the bottom bar is messed up.

On my former comp this never was a problem, now it seems it is.

But I dont remove all components which are related to Baldurs Gate (that is, I dont do a search for possible "left over" files)

Finally!!! I have found the solution to my ever lasting problems!!
I feel freed!! :D :p

After tons of research I found the solution to my problem right in front of my nose, literally....

It seems that my wireless mouse and keybourd have been the cause of all my problems...

Maybe you all think: "why should we care?"
Well I just wanted to post the solution (and the place where I found it) here, so other people might benefit from it...

Hehe, I had to take an old and dusty box from a deep place on our attic and I really had to dig deep to get a wired mouse and keyboard :D :p

nah kiddin, luckely our latest comp, which was still one of prehistorical computer age, had a wireless mouse, so I was saved... :D

I indeed put an old fashioned wired pair up, and BG was ones within my reach, heaven in house Da' Sytze :D
