Supercomputer
I'm looking to build a computer to take over the Internet. I'm no longer satisfied with what it has to offer and am looking to recreate things the way I want them.
You know, I want to be able to buy cats online and control satellites to take care of my lawn. Those are just a couple of the small things.
Anyway, I'm just starting to research this so if any of you out there know of the hottest and most persuasive of hardware, please feel free to contribute here.
If your contributions are worthy, I might even be open to fulfilling a request or two.
thanks
Ned

Well if you're looking at Athlon's (which presuming your making a supercomputer you probably wouldn't be) you can't really go wrong with the NForce2 mobo's they are the peak of Nvidia and Athlon technology at the moment.
It all depends on what you want really, I mean if you're talking extravegant figures you could go for a graphics workstation board too.

I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.
The key question:
Is your internet takeover bid subject to a budget? And if so what percentage of your GNP (Gross Ned Product) are you willing to commit to this?

*looks out of window* well don't listen to Sleepy, Ned, I got one of these and it still hasn't mowed my lawn! Though it does seem to have made a half hearted attempt at weeding the flower borders. On second thoughts, that might have been the exhaust fumes from my car...hmm...if you want a gardener, I would get a new car, not a NForce2 mobo
j/k, sorry for spam

I think Ysh is quite right, although the Nforce2 certainly mows the lawn better than the original Nforce mobos which just couldn't perform as well. If you wan't to truly effect your garden anymore you have to stick with Intel, unfortunately. It's like anything though, if your on a budget then you get the best value system.
Although the perfect situation would be the cray model lawn mower but not everyone can afford one of those.

I'll answer in the order replies have been received.
To HLD,
When we're talking about the takeover of the Internet, I'm not really concerned with a budget as I'm certain cash availability will improve once all steps are in place.
Yes, we are looking at a new system. I'm leaning heavily towards a UNIX environment as the new NEDtel chipset has not been fully tested in the most hated of Microsoft environments. Obviously, we'll be butting heads with the beast eventually but at this point improvements must be made afore sacking Gates.
As far as Geek points, I'd say the NEDtel chipset is full of geek points.
Mr. Sleep,
At this point, if you looking to get involved, arrangements could be made where the specs of the NEDtel chipset architecture can be securely couriered to you. At that time, once you've reviewed the documents, if you're impressed (ahem, once you're impressed), I will delegate hardware decisions to you as most of my resources and time have been spent putting the finishing touches on NEDnet.
smass,
Nice to see someone with financial smartz contributing here. I haven't considered a whole lot from a business perspective. I more concerned with the hostile takeover itself and hopefully an HBC (high body count). Refer to my comments to HLD, once NEDnet is in place, cash availability will not be a problem. Therefore, I'd say our budget has no ceiling and while this may adversely affect the current GNP, in the long run as we 'think worldwide' we'll make up for any immediate overspending. Presuming you'd like to continue you're involvement in this grandest of coups, I'm sure we can arrange for Argyle to remain unscathed.
Ysh,
Once the power of the NEDtel chipset has been realized, we're all going to have beautiful lawns. If Sleepy accepts what I propose, I've no doubt he'll find a way to successfully integrate NEDtel into the nForce2 architecture. Perhaps you'd like to confer with Sleep on this since you both to seem as much interest as I in having a proper lawn and landscaping around the abode. Or, of course, once I own the Internet (and I must thank Al Gore for inventing it), I will require a queen to divert some of my obsession with global cyber domination to the finer things in life: like Irish whisky, naked Tai-che, and cow tipping.
Things did get off to a slow start around here. After 24 hours with no replies, I began to think myself insane, but with your supportive and insightful posts I realize I'm well the bounds of sanity.

@Ned, hmmm...that sounds most interesting, maybe I might apply for consideration for the post once I have read the small print.
In the meanwhile, as a simple observer, I propose that we put user interface high on the list of preferences. If we can devise something that is capable of landscaping the property, mayhap it might come with programs capable of washing Windows so that we can admire said landscaped property from the inside out, without needing relative XP, or being intimidated/patronized by cloudy Windows protecting us from the mess that might otherwise go untended or unappreciated by our own fair hand. We do need to maintain control, and be able to admire the handiwork of our machine having carried out our instructions.
I propose we build a machine capable of all of the above, plus more, but that will also enable us to have a more proactive role if we so choose. It is a fine idea having our desires second guessed by a microchip, but sometimes sponteneity is where the fun is. I might decide on a topiary, for instance, and we should have the freedom to program in said changes that may or may not be mood or indeed fashion related. I hear HLD likes cleaning Windows, if this is so, he should be allowed to disable the Window cleaning peripheral by simply pulling the plug, redesign his garden, then manually wash his Windows to accommodate the view if he so pleases.
Also there used to be a running joke
about the CD tray possibly being a drinks holder. Damned fine idea! Make sure we use a full case, with plenty of coolers, and there you go, spare bays, cool beer.

Argyle is currently beyond the reach of technology - the "D & D Super-Loser" shield is in place and will deflect all technological advances.
I concur with your thinking vis-a-vis the budget. Running a deficit at the outset should be no problem and in fact should endear you to the faction that controls most of the world today - the money lenders. Don't worry - bankers are greedy and stupid and you can manipulate them later - or join them - whatever.
I would offer more advice - but I need to go kill my 1823rd goblin....just because....
