Number of companions

I know since forever that in 'Torment' you can have 5 people within your group + yourself. Hovewer, recently I noticed that when I 'reform my party' (so remove some of my companions) there are 2 vacant, empty places that usually display the faces of characters. On the normal bar there is place only for 5+me (so, in a standard way), but when you remove sb from your group, there are always 2 places left, unused on the same bar. I wonder if there's any way to use this, f.e. to travel with the whole bunch of people that joined me, not only with 5 of them...... It's probably just a stupid detail no one cares for (game's creators included), but my curiosity can't be satisfied....... (sorry for next stupid remark on the forum)
