I don't think you can give items to your henchmen. I'm not sure though, since I stopped played the single player campaign a long time ago (since I hated it).
If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
Unless there is a mod where you can control the henchman's inventory, no, you cannot give him items. Bioware restricted the controls, but in the expansion pack to be released soon, Shadows of Udrentide, they have included inventory control.
you can give items to henchmen just by talking with them about their past. but you can give them just the items they need, not weapons etc. like the brooch (IIRC). if you want to give him the brooch, talk to him...

There is a mod that enables you to control the henchman's inventory I am quite sure it is an official mod from their site, but am not currently playing...
